The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]But isn't that slightly better than "you'll be assassinated within a year and a half of being elected" like the story is for Catholics?

It was three years dammit,THREE YEARS

And that still beats the message that,"elect me for xxx0,I even have a good VP since I'll probably die in office"

Seriously only Bush,Reagan,Adams and Monroe didn't die in Office, after a 0 election. (1840,1900,1920,etc)

Why do we keep telling kids that anyone can be president when it's not true?

Probably because telling a kid that they absolutely cannot be something doesn't exactly do wonders to their self-esteem.

EDIT: And now I get the top post of a page. It's like fate is giving me the figure.

@ Balmung: If you wanna go campaign for Ewing, you might have an easier time talking to people (especially people who care about the internet) by bringing up SOPA, as opposed to the usual slate of issues that people have heard about endlessly.

To be honest, it's a long article on something I have no interest in and sort of disgusts me, namely the military, so I have absolutely no motivation to read it.

Respectfully, deathpigeon, if you wish to comment on military matters beyond broadly political implications - such as Pakistani anti-drone capability, for example - you should read up on the topic, even if you don't like it, because otherwise you come off as somewhat naive. Yes, the USAF is a much more technologically advanced air force than its Pakistani counterpart. This does not mean that its drones would not be easy for Pakistan to shoot down if it so chose, because drones are not designed to defend themselves against a reasonably competent air force.

@death pidgeon- you wrong on the manuverability bit. Most of our drones used there are predators or preadtor derivatives, nearly all of which are turbo-prop planes. If their air force was just P-51s they could shoot them down. and comparing their power to that of the air force's is kind of pointless, this is about downing drones, not fighting our F-22s and F-15s.

[down] Oops. :P

@GMH: I'm actually not sure how much opposition it would get around here. I've met far too many (which is to say, more than zero, but still) people who think SOPA was perfectly reasonable. That said, if I ever get into a conversation about it, I'll have to remember that.

@Joe: "their" not "there".

Larry Sabato just came up with the most likely map in case of a draw...

I no longer regret voting for Obama. Nevada and Iowa are far more important than I thought.

And Sabato actually expressed an opinion that shares this belief with me.

"We don’t have a dog in this race, but we are rooting for one thing: no tie! A 269-269 Electoral College outcome would inevitably be a national crisis on par — or worse — with the 2000 Florida cliffhanger, especially if Romney lost the popular vote."

Eh, that map isn't gonna happen. Republicans are doing their damndest to make winner take alls into not winner-take-alls for states that typically go blue, so you'll see tiny tiny pockets of red within some of those states. When even 1 electoral vote matters, that means Romney wins.

I am actually considering a thread that asks the question "What does the rest of the world do if the United States falls into civil war again?". Imagining the hypothetical responses from British ministers, with their language of parliament and nervous pauses, is quite amusing.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Nervous pauses? I take it you've not really listened to much Parliamentary debate. then. tongue Heckles happen and pauses are often due to noise... (and, the Speaker going ballistic).

Actually, according to another website linked earlier in this thread (I think it was this thread):

http://doesmyvotematter.org/Since you live in Nevada, your vote is more valuable than a vote in any other state.
Lucky you.

Probably, but he claims that it will "definitely" influence the election and that "people will be shocked" by it.

Eh, the less attention you give him the sooner he'll move on to a new hobby.

And an electoral tie would be awful. It means we get the worst half of each ticket: Romney/Biden.

I'm getting a little concerned that my absentee ballot isn't showing up as returned yet. I sent it a few business days ago by now, and mail between home and where I am now is usually a one-day turnaround. I'm really not sure what happens if an absentee ballot gets lost in the mail, or something.

Hey, remember Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO), who said that he's not sure where Obama was born but he's sure that Obama is not American stands by his statement that he misspoke and apologizes?

Well, he was caught plagiarizing.

Hey, remember Senate candidate Todd "legitimate rape" Akin (R-MO)?

Well, he went and compared his opponent, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), to a "little dog" who fetches stuff.

Well, that wouldn't be too bad, but then one of his campaign staffers had this to say about it:

> "bullshitzu"
