The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think it’s just the outliers being noted there, so all the other Democrats voted for and all the other Republicans voted against.

Of those 6, Lipinski, Peterson and Cuellar are conservadems (and only Cuellar will be in Congress next year). Pappas apparently opposed a tax included in the bill? I don't know what's up with Bustos or Lamb, but both are from somewhat swing districts.

CBS: Judge orders restoration of DACA, opening immigration program to new applicants for first time since 2017

A federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to fully restore an Obama-era initiative that protects undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation, requiring officials to open the program to new applicants for the first time since 2017.

Judge Nicholas Garaufis of the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn instructed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to post a public notice by Monday that states the department will accept and adjudicate Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) petitions from immigrants who qualify for the program but are not currently enrolled in it.

Garaufis also instructed officials to grant approved applicants work permits that last for two years, instead of the one-year period proposed by the Trump administration over the summer.

Aww, that's so poetic. Trump gets to conclude his Presidency in the same way he began it: by getting reamed on his effort to kill DACA. What fantastic Bookends.

I've been thinking for a while how Trump losing to Obama's Vice-President makes for some pretty great Bookends as well.

It occurs to me that Biden breaking his foot not long after winning the election is a perfect example of how Biden's life is a constant roller coaster of good fortune and horrible luck.

If we're talking Bookends, top of my wishlist is Senator Ossoff. He lost one of the first elections of Trump's presidency, so now hopefully he wins the last election of Trump's presidency.

Seconding that. I realize that Republican voters won't care about the amoral climate machinations of their senators until Mother Nature sinks Florida into the sea but getting rid of these senators before that happens would be nice.

Wouldn't be surprised. After all, we have people literally dying from COVID but still deny that it exists.

Washington Post did a survey of the 249 Republicans currently serving in Congress (52 in the Senate, 199 in the House).

  • 25 acknowledged Biden's win - 11 in the Senate and 14 in the House. As the article notes, 6 of those 14 House Republicans are retiring this year, and another 2 come from strong Biden districts (Fred Upton and probably Brian Fitzpatrick).

  • 222 refused to say anything, being complicit in their silence, as they have been for the past four years.

  • 2, Paul Gosar (AZ-4) and Mo Brooks (AL-5), some of the most fringe members of Congress, are "publicly insist[ing] Trump is the winner".

Trump has raised 200 million dollars since the election. 6 million has been spent on his lawsuits. I have to admit a begrudging horrified respect. That is the kind of money that may mean he survives his BILLION DOLLARS of debt.

I also secretly hope this is coming out of the money that would be donated to Republicans otherwise.

[up]Being a senator is a difficult job for anyone. I doubt McConnell has much longer to live. If he dies or retires, regardless of who wins the senate, petty obstructionism will be weakened in his absence and the Dems will have it easier.

Mitch McConnell literally just won reelection. 6 years is a long time to do damage to the country. Just look at what he's accomplished in the last six.

And while I do think without him, obstructionism will be somewhat weakened, whoever is his successor will probably run on the same playbook. It's folly to think that Mitch McConnell is the only person making the Senate hard for Democrats.

The Hill: Maloney vows to overhaul a House Democratic campaign machine 'stuck in the past'

To move the party into the future, Maloney is vowing to listen to younger progressives when it comes to social media and digital outreach; to shift away from "stuffy old traditional crappy polling" and adopt community-based focus groups; and to reject the idea that big fundraising hauls are synonymous with election success - a formula that didn't play out this year, when Democrats raised historic amounts of campaign cash but still lost House seats.

Maloney, a member of the centrist New Democrat Coalition, is trying to stay above the intraparty warfare, and he pledged that his door will be open to diverse, progressive upstarts who've been shut out of the DCCC operation in the past. Indeed, he's vowing to seek their counsel on digital outreach and organization, and he's urging fellow moderates to do the same.

Maloney is the new head of the DCCC, which is the House Democrats' campaign arm. He's got a hard task ahead, so best of luck to him.

Remember that Mc Connell can only do what he does because the rest of the GOP senate allow him to. They keep voting for him to be majority leader, so this is what they want. Now that they've seen that obstructing works, the next leader after Mc Connell will do the same.

Honestly, it's less about Mitch's skill at it as much as how there now exists a right-wing media bubble that insulates him and his party from all of the negative consequences of their blockading everything that comes before them.
