Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's actually a good thing they did, the monolith was just a way to enter a planet-destroying game show.
In all seriousness, destroying the Monolith (which I think is just an art project thing, not an alien artifact) is a shame. I hope the people involved end up going to jail for Destruction of Property.
A new Georgia poll suggests that Republican lies about “voter fraud” are hurting the GOP
Ha, fucking called it.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIs this the poll Nate Silver discusses here
? Because if so it's a mirage, most likely.
Any sign that the GOP is being hurt in Georgia by this infighting is better than none.

x4 From what I understand, 2016 and 2020 were off basically everywhere, but 2017-2019 were more or less right (minus Florida, Florida always seems to suck). It seems like Trump and Trumpeteers do something to screw up the polling whenever he and his folk are running. My guess is either they lie on the polls or don't answer the polls at all.
I guess we'll see if 2021 still counts as a Trumpeteer year or falls into the line of 2017-2019. Maybe without Trump (plus this Republican Civil War in Georgia) this poll is more true then false, but again we'll have to see.

Exactly.
And it's not like Trump's rhetoric hurting their turnout is some crazy idea, decreasing trust in democracy logically reduces the chance of people engaging with it. Which isn't the best in the long term but could very well benefit us now.

Depending on State laws, that might have been when the mail-in ballots were allowed to start being counted, as at least a few States barred advance counting of absentee ballots.
Unfortunately, "centralization" makes conservatives break out in hives, at least when it's not them dictating it.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"It creates an excise tax on cannabis sales and directs the money to be targeted to communities adversely affected by the so-called war on drugs.
The bill specifically adds incentives for minority-owned businesses to help them enter the cannabis market, which has exploded in recent years given the relaxation in controls in some places within the United States.
5 Republicans voted for the bill and 6 Democrats against - those Democrats were Chris Pappas (NH-1), Dam Lipinski (IL-3) Conor Lamb (PA-17), Cheri Bustos (IL-17), Collin Peterson (MN-7), Henry Cuellar (TX-28)
Legislative leaders and Gov. Phil Murphy have a deal on the legalization of marijuana, capping the number of cultivators at 37 for the first 24 months, the New Jersey Globe has learned.
Murphy, who has made the legalization of recreational marijuana one of his top priorities as governor, was able to score an agreement with Senate and Assembly Democrats at 4 PM on a Friday.
70% of the sales tax will be dedicated to social justice programs, and 100% of the social equity fund will be used on social equity programs.

Some nonsense about "they were hiding suitcases of ballots underneath the tables and counted them after the observers left! That's why Biden won Georgia! There was a spike in the vote counts late at night!" fact check
I know trying to comprehend these conspiracies is an exercise in futility but, like, in this scenario why would Democrats need the suitcases to count votes after third-party observers left? Wouldn't forging a number with no supervision of been easier than manually counting the contents of a briefcase? And why do the votes being in a suitcase indicate those votes were fraudulent anyways, especially since the article notes they're normally bulked in a container?
