Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Here's an article on it.
There's still some danger from disrupting migration but far less so.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. So this is what I was talking about a while back when I said that I'm still concerned about the fact that Congress has to certify the Electoral College results.
As the article acknowledges, in practice it's likely just theater, but I still hate that this is scheduled to happen a day after the Georgia runoffs, because either outcome there is going to get seized upon by Trumpists.
Actually, the most interesting takeaway from the article is that Democrats made noises to this effect after the 2000, 2004, and 2016 elections. Although it's weird that the only time a member of the Senate actually joined in was in 2004 - which is the only election in my lifetime where the Republican candidate actually did win the popular vote.
Double-post, but this is the first time I've seen any major Democrats reported to be openly tearing into Cal Cunningham's affair for costing the NC Senate race.
I'm still not entirely sure whether I think that's what actually happened there, but it was an infuriatingly stupid self-own either way, so this was kinda cathartic.
I'm of the opinion that it didn't change the outcome of the race (Biden lost NC), but it was such an irresponsible thing to do in the middle of one of the most important elections of the year and showed a profound lack of judgement.
- The Maine Republican was chastened for voting to confirm Brett Kavanaugh after he faced charges of sexual assault.
- When Ginsburg died, Collins appealed to Democrats, independents and undecideds by opposing filling her seat until voters picked the next president.
- The Senate still plowed ahead with confirming conservative Amy Coney Barrett, but Collins got political cover from her no vote. She went on to defeat Democrat Sara Gideon.
This is something I've been thinking as well. The last minute Supreme Court vote (useless though it was) let Collins win back some of her moderate image and swung some late deciders and people on the fence her way.
Not sure if this has been talked about before, but this worries me:
Neera Tanden has spoken repeatedly about how she hopes to cut Social Security. Combine this with some of Biden's comments in the recent past, and it paints a troublesome picture.
What are the chances Biden actually tries to cut SS at some point?
The hardest thing in this world is to live in it.I haven't had the time to check out the validity of the sources themselves, but wow, that article is filled with quotes and references from what I consider some of the most toxic and bad faith voices on "the left".
Citing Briahna Joy Gray, Walker Bragman, Ryan Grim and Glenn Greenwald as progressive voices unhappy with the pick/using their reporting to criticize Tanden - if they're the only ones speaking out, I think it'll be okay.
Yeah, Glenn Greenwald for one ultimately proved to be too much even for The Intercept.
As in the progressive media outlet he helped found.
Specifically, the staff refused to give him Protection from Editors anymore and he up and left in a huff.

Scaled seekerCrimson, we have quoteblocks.
Also, I'm a bit leery of the way you're putting that last sentence. Sounds...close to accusatory?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.
