Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

For what it's worth, The Onion has actually made a public statement about not talking too much about Trump if they can, on the basis that they kept making jokes that turned out to be literally true.
Having said that, I don't know how serious they were or if they've stuck to it.
Leviticus 19:34Speaking of which, many right-wing leaning people seem to have a deep distrust towards mass media in general in the US, accusing them of being biased to Democratic or liberal leanings at best or denouncing them as fake news that run against "non-compromised impartial news outlets" like Fox News, OANN or Newsmax at worst.
Is there any precedent behind this disdain towards mainstream media in American society, or are they just parroting what the GOP propaganda outlets tell them?

I don't know when exactly this started, but essentially anything that isn't straight capitulation to GOP dogma is too liberal for them. You can see it with how Fox, by simply acknowledging Biden won the election, is now considered too liberal for certain parts of their viewerbase.
The problem is essentially the whole "reality has a liberal bias" thing - it doesn't actually, but the core of that expression is that democrats actually bother to care about what scientists and other relevant experts have to say about a given subject, and base their policy accordingly like a rational political party. Republicans on the other hand will readily downplay science and academia, whether it's cynically to get votes or because they are true believers. Fox News and right-wing radio pundits have also been stoking this for a long time. So the GOP voterbase is basically conditioned not to trust what experts say if it goes against dogma.

It's likely that the age of (dis)information with the advent of social media has made it more difficult for people to discern between junk information and actual news material with integrity. While it's pretty obvious that the hardcore right-wingers are just looking for a boogeyman, what I don't understand is why even the more level-headed Republicans and right-wingers still distrust the media quite deeply.
I know this one artist who has a fairly right-wing leaning. He keeps reposting tweets from that bozo Scott Adams and kept saying things about how the mainstream media is guilt-tripping people into social issues that aren't as big as they believe. What strikes me odd is that he doesn't seem to be a Qultist or even that far deep into conservative ideology.
Scaled seekerLike I said, at some point you have to stop applying misunderstood to people who are against you and start thinking, "Maybe they're just assholes."
Which is against my inclinations but reminds me of a story. I had one friend who, like me, was a Actual Pacifist. He was even further Left than I was but also a better person who believed people were fundamentally good. My friend believed pretty much that crime was only because of need and that bigotry was ignorance. One day, while walking along the street, a guy just randomly tasered him. Guy apparently bought one and decided to test it out.
It really fucked with my friend because it was an encounter with Evil Is Petty that had no excuse other than It Amused Me.
I feel like the last four years has had a chunk of America embracing that.

I think there is a Sadist part in all of us. When we hate someone, we want to see them suffer in awful ways. It is natural.
What we can do is channel that anger and hatred into something productive and positive, like doing good, because Good Feels Good. Unfortunately many don't know this and instead give in to their hatred, lashing out at other people who didn't do anything to them.

No he eventually bounced back but it was a nasty moment for him. It actually helped him prepare for Trump because he stated he forgot that so much of society is punching down not up.
I had a better grasp on that because I used to be The Fundamentalist and knew that kind of nasty self-righteous sadism first hand.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. The GOP is basically a party that doesn't demand anything of you. It doesn't demand that you better yourself. It tells you that you're already Number One just by being a "real" American. That attitude is after all the core of nationalism.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThe perceived left bias is not strictly a US thing, I think. I've heard Dutch talk shows accused of being too left leaning, specifically on inviting politicians. The host pointed out that they kept inviting politicians from right wing parties, but they often didn't come.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesAbout Latino voters, you have two main blocks that vote Republican.
The Cubans, which still pretty deep in the whole Red Scare thing and will vote to anyone who they don't consider a leftist and the Catholic Latinos who consider things like supporting abortion a big no.
You also have the self loathing Latinos who still act like they are considered white in the US, so Boomerang Bigot is in full effect.

So the orange cheeto paid $28k per vote just to make himself lose bigger? Holy shit, the Onion will probably have to shut down for good soon. I would be laughing my lungs out if it weren't for his cult sucking up to whatever bullshit he spews on an hourly basis and predictably denying this as fake news.
