Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Mayor Laguardia tried to get the American Nazi Party to turn on their leader by revealing he'd been massively embezzling money to pay for his mistresses as well as lavish lifestyle. Fritz Khun argued, successfully, that as the American Fuhrer he could do whatever the fuck he wanted with the money.
So Laguardia settled for just arresting the fucker.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Yeah bipartisanship with Republicans means surrendering and allowing them to dictate policy.
If Biden tried for bipartisan action on healthcare it means the end of Obamacare, bipartisan action or immigration means the deportation of Dreamers.
Obama’s insistence on a bipartisan approach to Russia meant that Americans went unwarned about Russian election meddling.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranHow the hell do you have bipartisanship with people who don't care if poor people, racial minorities, and LGBT people die? And who actively deny reality because they're the puppets of corporate interests?
Compromise is a means to an end, I don't see any good end to engaging in bipartisanship with such people.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAlso, the alternative to bipartisanship would likely lead to a conservative revolt.
If I may trope, Good Cannot Comprehend Evil.
People don't seem to believe Republicans really WOULD let hundreds of thousands of people die than give money to poor, black, gay, or Latin people (or some combination of the above). They absolutely would. It's a feature not a bug and we have EVIDENCE they would this year.

x5 This is coming from a man who has used Twitter even before running for presidency to insult, mock, attack, or even threaten others whom he thought was nasty to him. If he gets Twitter banned, he loses his favorite app.

"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - DawnThe Dems will have to start breaching out to non-Democrat voters. Those who remain doubtful about the democrats for whatever reason but aren't too high up on the Republican loyalty tree. The Dems will have to avoid catering to Republican politicians and fall for their honey trap once more. There's a difference between a Punch Clock Mook and a fanatical threat.
ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.With the bipartisanship, I point to Richard Mourdock
, who ran for Senate in Indiana (ousting six-term incumbent Richard Lugar) as part of the 2012 Tea Party wave, and a large part of his win in the Primary can be summed up with one sentence: "To me, the highlight of politics, frankly, is to inflict my opinion on someone else." This was after saying his more famous line of "bipartisanship ought to consist of Democrats coming to the Republican point of view."
Oh, and as for why he didn't win the general election? It was because this was during the wave of the abortions-resulting-from-rape debate, and he gave this answer at the debate when asked about it:
The sad irony is, I actually respected him for that stance - I disagree with him vehemently about it, but the tone and weight with which he said it convinced me that he had genuinely given the topic some thought, and came to a conclusion that he wasn't actually all that comfortable with, which is an admirable quality.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"I can't really respect anyone that can say, with a straight face, "God wanted you to get raped."

I think it's more along the lines of In Mysterious Ways - and again, for me, it was the fact that he had put thought into that position, even if his conclusion is one I find loathsome.
Myself, I fucking hate the idea of Fatalism, since it then becomes "Wait... so why the fuck did we get kicked out of the Garden of Eden if God planned for us to eat the fruit of knowledge anyway?"

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"That said, I'm disregarding it as amusing but highly unlikely, and the first half of that is the only reason I'm sharing it at all.

I'd heard something about that too. A handler that worked with him on The Apprentice outed him as having soiled himself after a take.

Putting up a pretense of bipartisanship for the sake of optics is one thing, but actual bipartisanship is simply not possible now regardless of anything the democrats do.
