Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It might make your head hurt.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Wait "at least 4% of GDP" on Military Spending?
But we are currently spending 4.8% of our GDP on the military.
I'm so confused.
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Jon Husted calls early voting "Un-American."
And Marco Rubio calls Equal Pay measures "Nothing but an effort to help trial lawyers.

Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryWell honestly the Patriot Act is still in effective(mostly). pigeon point mainly to the 4 main provision still in effect. While pigeon can blame democrats for keeping in effect however I blame the passing of the act in 2001. As for the drone strike I have no really comment.
The Reaper Games starts anew.Wait, whoa, did Johnson and Stein have an online video debate?

Well, I guess she's ok now.
@deathpigeon: Quite weird though that the most "militaristic" people in the Wehrmacht (whom Hitler terms as the "Prussians") are quite reluctant to have to do anything at all with their Fascist..."colleagues" (i.e. Nazi party members, and especially the SS). And would rather that they don't have to deal with them at all even though they're the ones being glorified (since even at the peak of the SS' powers the regular military is still bigger, and the Wehrmacht is still the face of the German war machine).

@Kiddo: First, powers are only effective if they are used. Obama didn't have to use the powers granted to him by the Patriot Act. Second, it received bipartisan support in 2001 and every time it was renewed. Third, it was just recently renewed in 2010, when we had a Democratic House, Senate, and President. There is no excuse for the Democratic party.
@entropy: And many military men today don't want all the glorification of the military and spending increases for defense here in the US. Fascism is not necessarily a government that came from the military, but it sure as hell glorifies the military.
Most of the time, but not every time
Of course what really matters if how things like that Patriot Act are used. Of course its unlike that we will know the whole story.. Paranoia Fuel much?
Also the law needs a name that's more politically neutral. Assholes called it the "Patriot" Act so it was political suicide to vote against it.

Really worried that if Romney (or even Obama...possibly) gets in he'll take this advice. How can you think of going to war, barring a direct attack, without negotiating with the other side directly? Do they honestly not see the kind of losses (human and material) and further geopolitical implications of this kind of conflict? Hindsight is 20/20 but this one seems so obviously stupid to get into... and they keep going for.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.![]()
Its actual name is " The Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001"
Well remember people define the 'fat' differently.

And Obama has certainly been using the Patriot Act's powers, and it seems like he's been using it very similarly to Bush.
"Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism" That was almost certainly intentional by the person or people who named the law.

Man you guys really dislike the Drones.
I'm also seeing the 'fascism' label being used, with little regard to the fact that it is an actual form of government and not just a random slur.
EDIT: And now I get the top post of a page.
It's like fate is giving me the figure.
