The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Huh? Just a week or so ago Loeffler and Perdue were demanding that the Republican, Trump-supporting Secretary of State of Georgia Brad Raffsomething resign because Trump didn't win Georgia.

Republicans are in a tricky spot where they have to acknowledge that Biden won the election but can't do so publicly because of the backlash from Trump's voters if they acknowledge Biden won the election.

So I guess in the end, when they are backed against the wall, they will pull the "We totally won for real, but these evil Dems are so wicked, they destroyed all the evidence, so we have no choice but to concede!" card.

Frankly, the Republicans should rip that bandaid off as early as possible or it will haunt them.

Donors are demanding their money back since it turned out that Donald could never actually overturn the election and has no evidence of fraud. This is one of those things where you have to wonder, "Wait, why would you ever believe in the first place?"

It is almost like, they were supporting a con man or anything like that.

Serves them right, if they are dumb enough to donate to Donald Trump and believe his bullshit, then they deserve to lose money.

Now they are going to see their lawsuits never go anywhere, just like Trump has been doing with his creditors.

There is no I told you so sign big enough for these people.

I mean, probably not, but wouldn't be the worst idea.

This is already in the COVID-19 thread, but Gov. Mark Gordon (R) has tested positive for the Coronavirus after resisting calls for a mask mandate. I wish these people would be smarter than this.

I mean. You're not wrong. But personally, I would prefer it if Trump's attempts to steal the election didn't end up turning a profit, and I don't see any other way to stop that from happening. And, like, if the two sides in a court case are 'a con man' and 'people who unwisely gave money to a con man', well, I know whose side I'm on by default.

I'm reminded of Tiny Toons of all things where Montana Max gave a bunch of money to send poor people to the moon.

Trump is a poor con man to support but the donor elicits less sympathy than he should.

IMO, that's a somewhat misleading headline. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez isn't the only one suggesting Executive Action is sufficient to cancel student loans - Sens. Schumer and Warren think it can be done, too. They even put out a thorough proposal earlier this year.

[up] Whether or not the idea is possible, Betsy DeVos will still be replaced.

So, according to CBC (who themselves got it from Reuters, I think) , T**** has said that if the electoral college confirms Biden, he'll leave the White House, but he still will refuse to admit he was defeated.

Progress?

[up][up][up]If he leaves the moment Biden is certified, Pence could manage the White House as acting president before Biden is inaugurated. Even though Pence is a Heteronormative Crusader, he's loads better than Donnie Tinyhands.

Part of the problem that people had with Pence vs. Trump is they assumed that Pence was worse because of his being a true believer but missed that Pence was a lot more of a conniving politician than they believed and Trump had plenty of nasty beliefs that made him every bit as much a bigot as Pence (look at his treatment of trans Americans).

Pence has impulse control and cares about his political future; that alone probably guarantees he'd be a decent lameduck President, though he'd be awful as President in his own right.

Trump is malicious and incompetent.

Pence is malicious and competent.

The biggest difference between them is how much harm Pence could do without being blatantly obvious or drawing so much attention.

As awful as Trump is, his tendency of not keeping his mouth shut, alienating potential allies and attacking every possible opposition, means that all the malicious shit Trump has ever done or tried to were painfully obvious to the public, thus easy to rally against.

Pence was in position to pass so much worse things without drawing attention, but the Mango Moron couldn't keep his toilet seat shut.

Just to get the obvious question out of the way: Is Trump promising to step down if electors choose Biden him trying to angle his way into a Pence Pardon? If so, do you think he is aware that doesn't protect him from state charges?

@sgamer82 Nah, I think what Trump is saying is that he isn't going to camp in The White House if the electors say he lost. He doesn't think he lost legitimately, but he won't fight it to the extent that he's gonna have to get his ass thrown out.
