The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

One of my biggest fears is finding out that one of my favorite younger actors or actresses when growing up turned out to be a Trump supporter.

Thankfully so far this hasn't been the case, as Shawn Ashmore and Brandon Routh of X Men and Superman Returns respectively are liberal, and while Alexa Vega from Spy Kids is a Christian, she seems like the non-fundamentalist kind like Sean Astin, who supported Biden this year.

However for those who grew up with actors like Kevin Sorbo, Dean Cain, and Scott Baio only to find out that they are Trump supporters now, I feel your pain.

[up]Good. If Dems keep this up while the Republicans fight each other, the Dems can win the Senate. They shouldn't let this opportunity go to waste.

Not really surprised by most of the celebs who've turned out to be Republicans thus far.

People who were adult film stars (uh, film stars who were adults, not stars of adult films) when I was a wee young'un are Gen Xers and Boomers. Boomers are intensely conservative; Gen X is a crapshoot, though I've seen more Gen Xers side with their parents than their children in the culture war between Boomers and Millennials.

Also I've just kind of assumed that all country music stars or NASCAR drivers or rodeo cowboys are Republicans until proven otherwise. Also any white male stand-up comics whose routine at least partly consists of "Women amirite?!" And people who create and/or star in movies whose premise is "Guns: The Answer to All of Life's Problems!"

I think the only celeb Republican reveal that's surprised me was Roseanne Barr, and even that was moreso for how deep down the rabbit hole she was.

I saw today some video about how liberals have problem with calling conservatives stupid in really condescending ways and ignoring hypocrisy of it and how conservatives are too close minded to try to market their beliefs to groups to which their values appeals to.

I thought while the video was really rational and well thought out, it was also incredibly naive video since the speaker didn't seem to realize that reasonable conservatives have been replaced by white supremacists long ago tongue

He's not on the list above but I was dismayed when I found out that Mike Nelson of MST fame tends to vote Republican. Don't know if he is a Trump supporter, however (and I kinda don't want to know, TBH).

The parasocial relationships with actors strike me as weird. Even if I too suffer from them.

I guess its because its easy to assume that people you admire or see as being talented in their work are "smart" or think in same way you do(because everyone believes their own worldview to be correct), so when you see them say stuff that baffles you in "how can someone think or believe this" that makes people assume they are either stupid or lying or otherwise malicious tongue So it hurts you because you are disappointed in them because you expected better?

Thankfully I don't know 90% of those people. I knew Kid Rock was one before reading the list as he's referenced by many a Late Night host, and found out about James Woods. But I'm more concerned about the Paranoia Fuel about potential others that I might actually know of.

Now that I think about it, I think most of my celeb political reveals that surprised me actually went the other way.

Taylor Swift came out hard in support of Democrats and even wrote a song, vapid though it was, about LGBT rights. I wasn't really prepared for that. She's rich, extremely petty, and self-absorbed. I just assumed she was a Republican.

I get the dissonance. It just gets incredibly weird.

Like, a friend of mine form the U.S once explained to me how intricately intertwined sports and politics are in the United States (Especially during Super Bowl times). I can get that - being from Latin America, I am familiar with sports' impact being larger than apparent.

So I can see the paralelles. I can feel the parallels - I too have my personal instances where the political preference of someone's left me feeling squeamish.

But god damn if parasocial relationships aren't a weird thing.

[up][up] Swift does have a (well deserved) reputation, but she also repeatedly called out production studios for ripping off the musicians who work for them. Especially less popular ones, so not all that surprising.

Though I will admit to being entertained by some celebrities who have unfortunate views, all the people that make the things that mean the most to me are either very upfront about being democrats, or are otherwise removed from the US enough not to care. Probably helps that I lock on to writers more, and the things that draw me into the writing are similar traits that I care about in political views (especially a lack of mean-spiritedness).

I have found most Pop Artists are less vapid than one gives them credit for. Once they get into the industry, they are immediately wrapped in so much red tape that their persona is rather subsumed but overall I think they are mostly people who enjoy a high paying job but don't wanna stand out more than necesary.

Doesn't make them good that they look after their wealth before anything, but still a bit more than the stereotypical dumb trollop bimbo slash drug junkie who writes songs about using Jack Daniels for mouthwash. Ke$ha actually got a near perfect SAT score and was going to study chemistry. But being a pop star is much more profitable.

I don't think I can blame them. I owulda made that choice too, I think.

"I'm not a racist and the people who voted for Trump, they're not racist either, and Trump isn't a racist, sorry. We just have a different opinion."

Roseanne Barr. That's...kinda funny, to be honest.

Fortunately, I don't take political opinions from celebrities. Or as a wise man once said, "Stick to flying, Lindy."

The time I was really interested in a celebrity's political opinion because she was a celebrity was Taylor Swift coming out against Trump and the alt-right, and that mostly because of all the delicious tears coming out from 8chan.

I didn't necessarily think Swift was a republican, just someone who didn't want to take any sides. It was a pleasant surprise to see her turn the other way around.

Morgan Freeman is an actor I think most people like, but who espoused some pretty dumb opinions. Though more than related to U.S politics, they were about race so they don't likely fit here.

Oh wait, I forgot he was the first U.S black president

On Twitter banning Trump, is there any evidence for that, or just what people wish would happen?
