The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's true. If solar and wind are actually more labor efficient, that means less people will be employed in those markets.

When you're near full employment, the economy is robust enough that they'll just fine jobs in other markets. But, well, the broken window effect is in play.

I admit from a political stand point it sucks to be in that situation.

I mean, in the long term it works out, but when has politics ever been about the long term? More people will be pissed NOW that you slowed down jobs from fossil fuel industries than glad LATER that you moved to a more reliable energy source.

Have we got the Ohio ballot investigation completely filled with the signatures needed?

[up][up][up][up] ...Well, if we run out of coal, all the coal workers will be out of a job, and will have nowhere to go. If we start developing green energy, it will be easy to expand those jobs, helping to counterbalance the loss in jobs from losing coal.

By the way since the next debate is coming up make sure to tweet to Obama more material to use. Also tell him to mention Romney encouraging employers to intimidate their employees to vote for him.

God fucking dammit we'd come out at a net positive on jobs if we switched from coal and old nuclear to integrated fast reactor nuclear. Retrofitting the plants, moving the fuel, recycling the existing waste we have into fuel, and the stuff's as clean as wind or solar.

Yeah, I'm all for building new up to code nuclear power plants, but there's still a culture of "Not in my back yard!"

Sell it as a way to remove existing nuclear waste. IFR tech can burn the stuff that's been building up in our underground storage facilities.

...and anything with the world "Nuclear" in it will attract strong, Nationwide Opposition — and people that would have the lights go out rather than build anything nuclear.

I find it interesting that the Republicans complain about how we're leaving a mess for our children by racking up this enormous debt yet they don't give a damn about the environment at all. It's really a far more pressing concern since it can't be fixed once it's broken, unlike the economy.

Then why don't they trust God to fix everything and stop trying to take over the country? Clearly he doesn't need our help.

Didn't Senator Inhofe write an entire book about how climate change can't be happening because God wouldn't let us destroy the earth?

Yes he did. I find that logic nonsensical though even when you assume God exists. I mean if Obama really is going to destroy America then why did he allow him to take over in the first place? What, God is just letting America get destroyed for some reason? You could argue he fixed things by letting the Tea Party take over but why bother when he could have stopped Obama to begin with?

well, as I understand it, theres two ranges of fundamentalist thought on why climate change isnt real

1: God will never allow the earth to be destroyed by humans

or

2: God's coming back any day now, so who cares if we use everything up ?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)

1. Then why did he let Obama take over if he's going to destroy everything?

2. How do you know he's coming back? Even if you did why does that give you the right to destroy his gift to us?

to answer no 2, theyve been convinced its the end times since the ink was barely dry on the bible. Therefore, if its the end times and jesus will be back any day now, then the second god comes back earth becomes perfect again anyhow, so who cares in the meantime? God gave humans dominion over the earth so lets dominion the fuck out of it.

Is there a #iknowyouarebutwhatami hashtag to describe mitt romney?

Specifically, his habit of disregarding all reason and simply reusing Obama's attacks against him, against Obama? Like accusing Obama of gutting social security?

@Terl: that depends. some people apparently interpret that to mean 'whatever we do to the land doesnt matter because its ours to steward"
