Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of course they enjoy their money. They dine at expensive restaurants, attend glitzy parties, buy houses, boats, and cars, but they also invest in stocks and bonds to keep their wealth growing.
Their consumption drives economic activity to be sure, but the wealthy save a much higher portion of their income than the poor, and those savings don't create jobs (at least not directly).
If you give a millionaire $10,000, they'll probably put it in the bank. If you give a working class family $10,000, they'll probably buy things they want or need to improve their lifestyle. The latter generates far more economic value than the former.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The smart rich person spends their money on things that are resellable assets and write offs on their taxes (like those glitzy parties).

Yes, Reaganomics has driven the country into the ground.

This is untrue, or at least not the whole truth. There are a few main avenues to get really wealthy in a capitalist society:
- Create something of unique intellectual value (a creative work, an invention) and sell it successfully. (J. K. Rowling)
- Create a business that is valuable enough to get purchased by a bigger business. (Paypal)
- Become a member of a high-value profession (athletic star, film star, lawyer, money manager, corporate executive) and then reach the top percentile of that profession. Market your brand.
- Get in on a growth stock early. (Amazon)
- Start your own business and retain ownership of it as it becomes a successful national brand. (Elon Musk)
- Obtain a unique position of influence and parlay it, trading favors for wealth, without getting arrested. (Politicians)
- Be born to someone who is already wealthy. (Donald Trump)
- Ride the coattails of any of the above.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Not quite.
Athletes in particular and also many kinds of entertainer can get rapid amounts of money that are more than any normal person will make in their lives. However, it is very easy for their fortunes to be wiped out.
You have to properly invest and sit on the money to build it into your own proper dragon hoard.
Which is, again, why Reaganomics does not work.
It's not necessarily a thing to get them to give up their money but give money regularly to the poor.
Edit:
I should note I grew up among some of the dumbest mutherfuckers on the planet in the Country Club set. They inherited their fortunes and would have run anything into the ground they put in charge of. However, they were surrounded by people who handled their money for them and they just had to let do their magic. Which is how the new aristocracy exists even when Don junior and Ivanka are the people behind it.

There's no such thing as eradicating all crime and evil forever definitively. It's just a matter of what you want to do about it: nothing (or actively contributing to make the problem worse, as conservatives often do), or try to minimize it as much as possible. "
I mean kinda, conservative try to do stuff but their answer is to double down in their idea of a good sociaty: educate them in the correct way and them asume people will do well, when it fail, double down on it.
In short they are kinda one trick pony, which is a diferent of liberals who in theory and sometimes in pratice are kinda try to improve current pratice to do something.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Back to something more on topic: Trump's lawyers royally screwed up his case by listing Minnesota locations in their affidavits regarding the Michigan vote.
If they had a leg to stand on before (unlikely), they really don't now.

FYI - here's a bunch of laws for states with Faithless Electors.
Michigan cancels the vote of them and replaces them until they vote for the candidate who won.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. So, something that's come up in news programs, or any news commentary, is in elections, we aren't really voting for a President, we're voting for electors (the people in the electoral college).
The question I have though is, how do we vote for an elector, if (according to what I've heard) the public isn't supposed to know who the electors are?
Like creepy stories? Check out my book! The identities of electors aren't secret, I don’t know where you heard that.
Also I believe you technically vote for a party, they have a selected slate of electors, the electors are committed to voting for a particular candidate and in many states legally bound to do so.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran

But if they hoard all the money, won't that force the country to print more money in order to cover for the losses produced by those dragon hoards and make society work at minimum, only to have that excess surplus swallowed up by the dragons and continue the cycle, until eventually, the dragon hoards are as worthless as gravel in the end?
Isn't hoarding money just an act of self-destruction for everyone involved, including the hoarder itself?
