Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, there's a difference between multiple Biden staffers comparing progressives to terrorists and one (progressive!) Democratic strategist who isn't a Biden staffer being concerned that progressives being aggressive might lead to Biden staffers going into that mindset.
Disgusted, but not surprisedre: "I don't want to die."
Thankfully, opposing racism is not on the list of compromises that any Democrat is willing to make.

Watch Symphogear...Okay, I guess my take away was incorrect. I was under the impression that she was a Biden staffer and was speaking for the views that some of the team held.
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerI don't think it's even really about comparing people to terrorists, per se. "We don't negotiate with terrorists" just sounds like a memetic way of referring to mutual hardline negotiation stances.
I dunno why this was a big discussion, honestly.
Maybe 'cause the Republicans have been referring to protestors and Dems as terrorists this entire time, so when Democratic strategizes start using that word the immediate reaction is "seriously!?"
The awful things he says and does are burned into our cultural consciousness like a CRT display left on the same picture too long. -FighteerSpeaking of judges, whenever the Dems take control of the Senate (whether that be this year or 2022), should Biden try to get as many progressive judges confirmed on the courts, or take moderation in confirming them for "balance"? Because as was seen with Orange Skull and Mitch the Bitch, the GOP does not care about balance on the courts. And I'm glad that at least the GOP hasn't damaged the lower courts (such as the Pennsylvania Supreme Court) to the point that almost every judge on them is a die-hard Crowleyster.

"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - DawnAny court vacancies should be filled by qualified progressive nominees regardless of senate control, and if Mitch won’t hold votes on nominees Biden should explore the legal options for presuming that the senate has agreed to “advise and consent” unless it issues a statement to the contrary.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranThey have damaged the lower courts immensely, Trump has appointed more federal judges then any president in history.
The answer is pretty obviously Liberal judges, but the question is currently will any even be able to be confirmed, because without a senate majority the answer is no, and honestly I am not sure if the Dems will be getting a senate majority.
Would it be possible for Biden to fire these judges unless they aren't die-hard Trumpies? If they aren't part of the Supreme Court, they almost certainly do not have the same level of protections, right?
I'm really irked seeing tweets from overseas
being pro-Trump, but in the case of Japan, their relations with China would make them favor Trump since he looks to be tough on China.
It reminds me of seeing tweets from a Hong Kong person with a rather naive impression of the US Justice System that would have easily resolved the BLM protests. Whatever positive image the US projects to other countries is just as bad as it tries to project on its own citizens.
With a '0', not an 'O'
Weird, because Biden, as he doesn't cozy up with Xi, would actually be more tough on China than Trump could ever be.
Though for what it's worth, his judges aren't quite as terrible as they could be - given some of them have been among the judges to throw out his nonsense lawsuits. One of my biggest fears pre-election was Republican judges simply accepting claims of fraud without requiring evidence, and it hasn't materialized at all. I know it's pretty sad that this has to be praised, but still.
Though supposedly this is the real purpose behind his (literally) half-assed Wisconsin recount.
To be fair the people who like Trump are a minority, the consistent reaction to Trump has been amazement at how much of a dumbass he is, and how such a dumbass got to be head of government.
You can find all kind of... shall we say "exotic" political stances on Japanese twitter if you know where to look
Can the president remove judges? I don't think he can, but I'm still imagining Trump trying to get rid of judges until he can ensure that only ones who will rule in favor of him are left, or firing every judge who rules against him. Hell, I can imagine him trying and insisting that he should be able to even when he's told he can't.

My favorite moment was when a Judge asked a lawyer if they were alleging fraud with the clear statement that if they were, they had to provide evidence.
The lawyer, reluctantly, said no.
