The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You do realize that the NRA/PATRIOT Act is deeply corrupt, and that Obamacare covers those with pre-existing conditions, right?

By "reasonable" on the Patriot Act I mean "opposes the civil-rights trampling parts of the Patriot Act that need to die in a fire".

And I like the NRA, because regardless of how impure their motives may be they are on the front line in defending rights that I consider important. My view on the NRA and gun control in general is that as long as they're determinedly fighting for their AK-47s and Uzis and tanks and whatever my 12-gauge shotguns and .22 rifles will be safe.

The Obamacare argument has been had many times and I won't reiterate it here.

And everybody else already said what I was going to say about the No Child Left Behind Act.

[up]...And now, IMHO... Obamacare's OK, but doesn't really solve the issue at hand in that area, hence the hatred - even if it does halt ripoff artistrs from ripping people who need it with pre-xisting conditions off, so I don't want to see that go anytime soon.

I'm with you on The Patriot Act being a tool to promote fascism.

I'm definitely with you on Americans having a right to bear decent-level arms, despite a lot of sickos out there wanting to make us who are smart and responsible look lik shit (and I'm not even armed).

As for NCLB - that was a failure that should have never crossed anyone's minds if they wanted to improve ANYTHING PUBLIC in this country; they shouldv'e focused on getting corporate influence out of the classroom first if they wanted a solution to the lack of good education around here. But like you just said...I'll drop it from here.

I thought it was hated because it gave the government more control over healthcare.

That's certainly why the Tea Party and Libertarians hate it.

[up]

I'm also with you on Gun Control and The Patriot Act.

despite a lot of sickos out there wanting to make us who are smart and responsible look like shit (and I'm not even armed.

I really agree with this sentiment.

Some people hate it because of that, yes. Some others hate it because it's a corporate deal that's serving up individuals to insurance on a silver platter because the insurance companies have essentially been holding the US hostage for the past... well, for a really, really long time.

Sadly, even if he happened to be a brilliant political and administrative mind, I don't think a man with that name is getting in the Oval Office anytime soon. People are petty.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

I'd keep an eye out for Mr. Bush. People may be petty...but they also have short memories. He's not running for office this cycle. I'd say we're looking at at least twelve years before a possible White House run. By then, don't you think a lot of people will remember the good times under the previous Bush administrations?

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Mainly. Still considering liberals and democrats are the people who pass and create most Gun Control laws, its not an entirely unfair assumption.

F from the Brady campaign.

EXPANDED gun rights on public property!

The NRA turned into a lying Republican organization some time in the last 2 years (they endorsed Harry Reid in 2010, so they were still sane then.)

Yeah, I really disprove of the current NRA leadership and I think they might be engaging in some fear mongering to drive up gun sales.

Although they still do endorse some democrats.

That seems a bit unfair.

On a side note Elina Kagen, one of those Supreme Court Justices that the NRA had called "anti-gun" had compared the NRA to the KKK back in 2010 calling them both "bad guy" organizations.

And they make a fair case against Justice Sonia Sotomayor

To be fair. when your president offers up a conspiracy theory that Obama did nothing about guns so that he can lull us all into a false sense of security and ban all guns the day he gets re-elected is kind of in line with the sort of insanity white supremacist groups adore.

Since arms is a synonym for weapons. I think it would be a much more interesting world if people carried swords as well.

Fight smart, not fair.
