Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't even know why people keep talking about AOC in terms of any higher political office at this moment. She doesn't even seem to want to, and she isn't stupid, she knows she isn't that popular nationwide and would likely get crushed. IIRC she even went so far as to say she isn't sure how much longer she wants to stay in politics because of all the stress and shit-flinging that she gets put through.

> Letting her run for president would be totally stupid.
It would be a learning experience for her,and I know plenty of politicans run for the Presidency when they've got no chance of winning, you can get a lot of out of Presidential campaign if you're lucky
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverAOC on running for President:
Progressives: She's so smart. I can't wait for her to be the leader of the progressive and vote for her.
Like, what does it say that when the people who likes the progressive woman of color still doesn't really listen to her?

What a petty Slimeball. He will never accept the results and move on. People should just ignore him, because he's only asking for the one thing he loves most: attention. If people, including news outlets, ignore Donald, they deprive him of his necessity.
So Biden's getting his cabinet members on of a Black Friday Deal?

It is a good attitude on AOC’s part, and it’s fine for a person to simultaneously want to be involved in politics and advocacy and want to vote for someone progressive who is inclined to listen to you and share your ideals.
To me, that attitude rather than specific policy differences was the big difference between the Sanders and Warren campaigns. Sanders’ was focused on “we will make change, together'' while Warren’s slogan (“She’s got a plan for that”) was focused on her fixing things. The populist-technocrat divide (both of those terms are negative-connoted, but I wan’t come up with better ones at the moment) is substantial. Obama’s electoral success was rooted in appealing to both.

Matthew McConaughey told a radio show he is considering a run for Texas governor.
Well, given that Texas' Lt. Gov was among those advocating for reopening because "The economy could die!" while blithely ignoring that real people could die from COVID... could they genuinely do much worse?
Esquire has an interview with him
, and given that it was part of a memoir promotion, this statement on the radio may be something in the same vein.

Doesn't seem that McC holds that view - and part of that interview does resonate, in which he talks about how "people are elastic" when it comes to change - some will stay in the new spot, while others will revert to exactly how they used to be before The Event (in this particular case, COVID) even started.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Tempting Fate, much? Florida's governor was peddling dangerous misinformation about COVID-19 being harmless to children and athletes, how far do you want to look?

AOC is super young and for all of her idealism, she still has extremely little political experience.
Letting her run for president would be totally stupid.
