The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump running in 2024 would be kind of a gift for the Democrats. A lot would have to go wrong for him to have a chance to beating Biden despite Biden having all the advantages being the incumbent brings.

The million dollar question is...will Trump run in 2024 if Biden decides NOT to run for re-election, cuz you know that's Trump's main motive now he wants to beat Biden. If Biden steps down will Trump's interest in the presidency fade?

[up][up]More than likely Biden will be saddled with a pandemic and the economic fallout of Trump's war on sanity while the republicans spend the next four years blaming everything on him and painting Trump as the savior. All it'd take is a little GOP ratfucking.

If doing that were enough to make Trump win the election, he wouldn't have just lost the election. And, indeed, Obama wouldn't have a won a second term. It takes a lot to unseat an incumbent.

My own suspicion is that Biden could run on the post-COVID-19 recovery once vaccines and the like are in place.

Biden apparently said he isn't running on 2024, and he is pretty old himself. The question would be how Harris would look as a presidential candidate.

That depends on how well she spends the next 4 years. If we get some serious changes that help everybody's lives that she helps put in place, it'll look good for her. If she's just in the background, it won't look good for her.

Biden has never said he wouldn't run for a second term. He's implied it, but any decision he's made one way or the other he's not going to come out and say and then automatically lame duck himself.

I can totally see Biden peacing out after getting the country back on stable footing, but if Trump does run again I can also see Biden running again because he's a proven counter to Trump and why would anyone swap out their winning horse?

Considering the advantage an incumbent has, i think Biden will run unless his health is *really* bad. He can always delegate more tasks to his VP.

The best case scenario would be for Trump to want to run 2024 but not getting the GOP Nom and running third party.

His health aside, Trump may not be in any financial shape to run in 2024. Lots of loans are coming due, and many civil cases are lined up against him.

Plus, if the Trump Organization and brand begins to collapse, well...he's tied much of his reputation to that.

Thing is, why the hell would anyone want to believe in the existence of a secret cult of Satanic pedophiles?

Like, demonizing people you already were already predisposed to hate is one thing, but from the way I've heard Q Anon described it's not necessarily hard-core lifelong conservatives that have been the ones getting sucked in.

I get the appeal of conspiracy theories on the political fringes, but I've never understood the causal factors in this particular case compared to, say, birtherism having a clear origin in racism/Islamophobia.

It's the latest incarnation of Blood Libel. The pressing need to demonize and hate is not a small issue but bubbling under the surface of a lot of cultures that creates lies about murdering children to make monsters of people. This is also something that has happened in recent memory multiple times:

Okay, so what's the deal with the Dominion machine business? Trumpsters keep claiming that those things have stolen the election but they never show any evidence of it, they just claim it has.

One can only hope this at least ends up discouraging the Trump base from voting in the future, as bad as that sounds.

What I really hate is that this man was easily one of the worst of all people... and he was lucky in spite of that. He got elected president, he got three judges confirmed on the Supreme Court, and despite (or even worse, because of) his Jerkass behavior managed to win more voters 4 years after his election. It seems to me that Karma in Real Life works the opposite way of how it does in the classical sense.

[up] It's probably more RNG existing above Karma in real life. Remember Hitler? He got cornered by multiple armies and met his end by self-gunshot. Not necessarily a failure of Karma.

In 2024, I imagine AOC is going to congratulate Biden and then try to shoot past Kamala Harris.

Unless the electorate's opinion of her improves substantially, nominating AOC in 2024 is political suicide. Her net approval rating is awful nationally.

She's better off going for Senator or Governor, or building influence in the House.

AOC notably won like 90% of her votes in her district. This despite the Republicans spending Bloomberg levels of money against her.

So keeping her there is fine.

I do hope she eventually runs for New York Senate.

In general, it's better to assume any fraud claim on this election is bogus at this point. They haven't shown any ability to make a good case.
