The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]Thank god. Imagine what Injustice Karen would have done if the Court decided on this case.

Though I seriously hope the Dems focus their attention on the Georgia run-off election later in December and do everything they can to win back those two Senate seats. Hopefully if they do so then Biden can more easily undo everything Trump did.

It was obvious that they weren't going to help Trump when Mitch and the others started fleeing the sinking ship. While Kavanaugh and co are partisan hacks, they are not beholden to Donald and I suspect they care much more about what Mitch and the rest want versus what Donald wants.

Roberts cares about legitimacy, and Gorsuch at least has shown little inclination to rule the way Trump wants.

And frankly, all 6 of the conservative justices don't want to be in the middle of a furious riot that makes last summer look downright calm.

[up][up]It's obvious that Roberts and Gorsuch would not help Trump. Thomas, Alito and Karen on the other hand...

Seriously, if the Dems win the Senate, then they can expand the court to add more Justices (including Obama?) and possibly investigate Alito for blatant partisanship, so that Mitch and the Republicans don't get what they want.

I admit to preferring to think that Amy fully threw Trump under the bus too because, at the end of the day, she only played the role of the loyalist.

But then again, I love those sudden anime betrayals.

[up][up]Maybe if Trump and co. continue to show their ugly behavior fighting fellow Republicans, maybe Karen could be disgusted at the man who got her confirmed and pull a Heel–Face Turn by turning leftwards. I hope.

The Supreme Court is conservative, yes, but they also - for the most part - care about the basic credibility of the Supreme Court. Which is why I can’t see them overturning Obergfell or Roe, much less handing Trump an election he has clearly lost.

They’re partisan, but they don’t want to be seen as overly partisan. They may weaken Roe, allow more state restriction on abortion without permitting absolute bans, but I don’t think they’ll overturn it alltogether.

And could we call ACB by her name? It gets confusing otherwise.

Question. Some of the more...fringe sides of the left are in a sort of rage about Biden's cabinet picks and are now wishing Trump had won. Is there something I'm missing since I've not heard much about that yet.

Has anyone aside from Ron Klain been announced? I've seen a ton of speculative news articles but those aren't particularly reliable, seeing as if you take them at face value there are about 5 people reportedly being considered for each position.

Anyone who wanted Trump to win should not be taken seriously, no matter their reasoning.

Accelerationism is possibly the dumbest thing to come out of the political left. Although it has to compete with various forms of authoritarianism/totalitarianism...

Ignore the loud minority, all they do is make it harder for more reasonable people to criticize Biden from the left.

Honestly the thought that accelerationism even has the slightest amount of chance to succeed is laughable at best. If you let people like Trump take power with the expectation that people who oppose him will unite to cast him down, you're just going to let the authoritarian get more power and crush your side with that power.

There was an announcement today. Jen O'Malley Dillon, Biden's campaign manager, is going to be Deputy Chief of Staff.

Heck, Trump did win in 2016. And lo and behold, things did not get better. Nor did the opposition get more united.

We don't even have a list of cabinet members and the few that are circulating around out there are of questionable veracity regardless. For sure, we can and maybe should signal to the Biden camp our displeasure with certain candidates, just to help make sure that he doesn't pick them, but we should also recognize that they aren't necessarily locked in stone and that the news of him considering them may be nothing more than false hearsay.

United long enough to get him out of office. Are any of these people whining right now even part of the Biden coalition? If not I have even less reason to pay attention to them because they played no role in stopping Trump anyway.

Opposition to Trump did get more united, after all red states turned blue and voter turnout was high.

Yes. Voter turnout was up, but not in a mass repudiation of Trump. More anti-Trump people voted than in 2016, and more pro-Trump people voted than in 2016.

And the fact that Trump could increase the number of votes he got after everything he’s done is very troubling.
