Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I thought we were talking about facebook people who go "Democrats are just as bad"?
@ Charles - Well, that's one way to make sure that Biden doesn't have secret service protection.
Yes, I realize that is in extremely poor taste (and I hope everyone affected recovers), but that was definitely something that came to mind. I wonder how it is so many, even considering the number of White House officials who have gotten Covid.

I always imagined Trump and his three adult children as the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, akin to the Seed family in Far Cry 5. John Seed even looks strikingly similar to Jr. But at least the Seeds cared for their cult.
ASAB: All Sponsors Are Bad.In the increasely likely-looking scenario where the Secret Service has to escort Trump out of the White House against his will. How would they decide who gets the honour of throwing Trump out on his ass?
I'm kind of imagining them holding a lottery of the position.

They choose five agents for the honor of the actual carrying and throwing (one for each limb, plus his toupee), while the "losers" of the lottery get the consolation prize of getting to shout out the countdown for the actual throw?
Someone did tell me life was going to be this way.I hate being No Fun Guy, but as tantalizing as that scenario is, the reality is that every ex-President is guaranteed Secret Service protection for the rest of their lives. So it's more like one squad of Secret Service folks would usher him out of the White House and into the protection of another squad, who now have the unenviable task of fending off almost guaranteed assassination attempts on the guy for years.
All of Trump's businesses exist to serve his ego rather than to make money, so not long. If other people run it and simply let him play at being a star, like on The Apprentice, it'll probably fare much better.

Assuming he's still alive and free by that point, his TV network would probably not last very long. I doubt Donald has the expertise of managing an entire TV network like Rupert Murdoch.
"I suspect their fear is that them doing these things would only accelerate the slide into authoritarianism because of a huge potential backlash that would empower republicans even more as they vote themselves back into power in the next elections. "
Is more than that, as this polarization rate go own it will affect the way the parties interact with each other and even if the posiblity of bipartiship be posible in the future as "no hold down, eveyrthing to win" become the norm from now on.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"Yeah the reality of the secret service escorting Trump is going to be that his detail for the day (or maybe even the day before) instruct him to get into either a car or Marine One, they then drive/fly him to one of his properties, then his detail stays with him and the car/Marine One returns to the White House.
Inauguration Day is a Wednesday, I’d say there’s decent odds that Trump goes to one of his gold courses for the weekend before and is simply never driven/flown back to the White House.
If they have to actually remove him by force we’ll never see it, as it will just be a brief struggle where they carry him from whatever room he’s in, to the waiting car, that then drives out the gate.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranApparently twitter (from WSJ) is saying that Charles Koch regrets his partisanship
. It's paywalled so I haven't read it. What I have to say to that is: "Too little too late asshole!" And also "Why are you still funneling money to republican campaigns then?!"

You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midHow many people can we afford to write off before it's too many?
Right-wingers won't vote for us because they think we're pedophile Satanists. Nothing we can do there. Better write them off.
Moderates won't vote for us because BOTH SIDES BOTH SIDES and at least the right is honest about it. Better write them off.
Left-wingers won't vote for us because we never actually accomplish the things they want us to accomplish in office, for fear of affirming the BOTH SIDES moderates' suspicions. Better write them off.
So who exactly are we trying to get to vote for us? People who hold left-leaning ideals but aren't too hung up, no skin off their back, if we don't actually give them healthcare and make cops stop shooting black kids? We rode a wave of "Fuck Trump" to a narrow victory in 2020, but are "Leftist, but cool with not making progress" voters really so reliable as a base?
Right-wing voters turn out in lockstep because they see their politicians fighting tooth and nail to achieve their agenda, no matter what it takes. The left has a serious problem with voter apathy because left-wing voters don't see the same. The right is playing to win while the left is playing to ensure that the game remains fair.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Tobias, 48 percent of voters wanted Trump. We're already tipping on the edge of being a complete write-off as a nation, and a species not far after that. We can only stand for truth and reality and work hard to get other people to accept those things.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I also think we shouldn't write people like that of by principle.
While many might be lost causes, there are quite a few people who left their hateful agenda behind.
Some Ex-Nazis are even motivational speakers for leaving that kind of life behind.
