Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The most basic definition of a republic is a country without a monarch, so almost all Peoples Republics Of Tyranny except for North Korea qualify as one.

Bet you 10 bucks Tuberville doesn't know that's what Nazi is short for.
This is Tuberville, on the Voting Rights Act. So I think we can safely say that he's just ignorant. He sounds like this on everything.
edit:
Hence why I added it as an example of him being an idiot.

I found that the main reasons a lot of right-wingers pretend the Nazis were socialists is because a) it makes it easier to demonise both socialists and "socialists" (i.e. anyone left of Hitler) and b) they actually really like a lot of what Hitler did, but don't want to admit to being fellow travellers of Nazism.

It's more common than you'd think. The world is full of mini-Trumps.
It's just that most of them aren't fortunate enough to benefit from the wealth and connections and other privileges that shielded Donald Trump from the consequences of his own many, many failings.

Disgusted, but not surprised>I will give the smallest benefit of the doubt and point out that the Nazi Party's full official name was the National Socialist German Workers' Party. National Socialism is also an alternative name for Nazism apparently. I could see someone stupid being confused by that.
It was also why that name was chosen. It's a vague jumble of terms so that it can have broad appeal. There's a reason they're called Nazi's though, Natzional Socialistishes Deutsche Arbeiters Partei.

As this Germanc caricature shows
◊, the Nazis pretty much emphasised different parts of their name depending on if they were talking to the working class or the elites.
But I wouldn't give anyone today the benefit of the doubt, if they called the Nazis socialist, to be honest.

We learn from history that we do not learn from historyMasks coming off (not that they were ever really on). Justice Samuel Alito delivered an address to the Federalist Society, in which he "abandoned any pretense of impartiality" and went on a "grievance-laden tirade" against everything from Democrats, to COVID-related restrictions, LGBTQ equality, and abortion.

"Unfortunately, tolerance for opposing views is now in short supply in many law schools and in the broader academic community," the justice said. "When I speak with recent law school graduates, what I hear over and over is that they face harassment and retaliation if they say anything that departs from the law school orthodoxy."
The persecution complex and complete lack of self-awareness are incredible. The Federalist Society has nominated 6 Supreme Court Justices (5 of whom are still on the Court)! An "elite group of appointed experts", what else do you think the Supreme Court is?
Alito went on to "suggest that the pressure Christians face surrounding their religious beliefs is akin to the strictures the U.S. placed on Germany and Japan after World War II," alleging that "in certain corners, religious liberty is fast becoming a disfavored right. Then he attacked LGBTQ rights and the Obergefell vs. Hodges decision under the guise of religious intolerance.
Alito argued that some recent Supreme Court decisions, including the landmark ruling upholding a constitutional right to same-sex marriage, fueled intolerance to those who believe marriage should be limited to unions between one man and one woman.
"Until very recently, that's what the vast majority of Americans thought. Now, it's considered bigotry," he said.
He also criticized COVID-related restrictions:
Other attacks were on abortion rights, Democratic Senators, the progressive movement. The entire thing is an 30-minute angry bigoted screed, soaked in grievance politics, all delivered in polite monotone. It almost seems like a parody, but no, it's real. Almost every sentence is as incredible as it is terrifying.

Same-sex marriage is as anti-Christan as how people being allowed to eat pork is anti-Semitic and Islamophobic.
Edit: I meant that freedom of religion does not include the right to impose your religious beliefs on other people, but I think I worded it wrong.

Just for reference, 57% of American Jews eat pork
, with the caveat that this is a summary of a 2015 survey; I can't find the original survey.
(Most Reform Jews don't have a problem with pork, but I wouldn't offer it to a Conservative or Orthodox Jew.)

To be fair, a Republic is a vague enough concept IIRC that it does, in fact, include People's Republics.
