Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What do you call the state legislatures? Do you call them 'Congresses'?
What do you call their Houses?
For example, in Britain, we have three Assemblies (Wales, Greater London, Northern Ireland) and two Parliaments (United Kingdom, Scotland). Only the UK Parliament has two houses (Commons and Lords).
...
Why are you guys a crappy democracy.
Why are you guys a crappy democracy.

We aren't accustomed to fighting for things that matter like the UK is...
I'm all for instilling some of these ideas back into the overly-retarded population we have... We could use some of that to improve things around here.

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacio2 things:
1. "House of Commons" and "House of Lords" are not really any cooler terms than "Senate" or "House of Representatives." Actually, I think "House of Representatives" sounds way cooler and more democratic than "House of Lords." (The English terms for the Finnish institutions are "Parliament" and "Cabinet" (the official term is "Council of State") so our terms aren't really any better.) Besides, the EU has superior institutions: the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, and the European Commission.
2. This is off-topic.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
3. This!
You're also stuck in the 19th century, too.
American politics have ideas that were popular in 1800s Europe.
Damn straight.

I swear you humans don't make any sense to me. You get into these big old debates about a bunch old guys who don't give a damn about you. Presidential elections all come down to deciding if you want a punch in the face or a kick in the balls. No matter what you pick you still get hurt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=MAEBgDZVLfU
this video is pretty much politics in a nutshell

I GOT MY MIND ON MY MONEY AND MY MONEY ON MY MIND@Omelet: We call them the State Legislature, the General Assembly, the General Court, or the Legislative Assembly, depending on the state. Each State's legislature is set up by the State's Constitution. The majority (41) are set up with a Senate and a House of Representatives, like the Federal Government. In five states, they're the Assembly and the Senate. In three states, they're the House of Delegates and the Senate. In Nebraska, there is only the Senate, and no other house.

@Grand Demon We all know this, but I know for sure most people would rather be punched in the face from which they can recover than be kicked in the balls and never have babies.
So we debate over which outcome will be a slug in the face,...most of us here are sure Romney's victory will give us a nasty curb-stomp in the balls,Obama's would just be a face punch,or simple kick in the balls
For any of you female tropers a punch in the boobs you can use as a substitute.
@ Triv. Wait, they get elected by districts? Are the districts in the State Senates larger than the State Houses?
@ Cats. I dunno. We differentiate between Welsh, Scottish, NI, and British representatives by their title (AM [Assembly Member], MSP [Member of the Scottish Parliament], MLA [Member of the Leg Assembly] and MP [Member of Parliament] respectively).
Nah, vote for a third party only if you have an actual problem with the two major parties.
@Hopey: I expect the state senate districts to be larger, since there are fewer members. It's basically X / Y. I know some states just define a senate district as a collection of a lower house districts.

3rd parties are nearly always just a way to throw away your vote though. we'd need a serious political and social movement the get a third party with any sort of power, even just enough to be a deciding factor in mos things.
Really a sane 3rd party with, say, 15% of the senate and house would be a good thing, compromises would be possible.
I'm baaaaaaack
...Only when they fuck things up for everyone nationwide!!

My God Romney owns voting Machines?!
Goddmit there is so much wrong with that. The federal government should be directly controlling those. Private companies shouldn't do anything but make the parts!
