The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If he's going to let the Republicans do what they want anyway despite all the crap they've done the past 4 years, he may as well be a Republican, because he's certainly not a Democrat.

That's not how this works. At all.

Having Joe Manchin around is still marginally better than an actual Republican. Labels have power in the Senate. The reason Mitch is able to do things like refuse to hold confirmation hearings for a Democratic President's nominees is because he's Senate Majority Leader, which is a title he holds because a majority of Senators have a "Republican" label over their heads.

If 51+ Senators identify as Republicans, regardless of how they vote, Mitch calls the shots in the Senate. Thus, despite the unpleasantness of dealing with Manchin, having him around is still preferable to giving Mitch another Republican Senator to further consolidate his dominion.

Manchin sucks, but having a conservative asshole with delusions of being a moderate holding up a sign that reads "SCHUMER FOR MAJORITY LEADER" at the start of each Congressional session is still an improvement over a genuine Republican.

[up]x2 Adams couldn't stand Jefferson, who had become his Rival at this point, and he also couldn't handle losing his Re-Election to him either (Adams is our first 1 Term President). He had also decided to be petty before Jefferson got into the White House, mostly by putting in a lot of Federalists into key positions that would be hard or impossible for Jefferson to replace. Marbury v. Madison was about one of those appointments.

According to TheOtherWiki, 3 other US presidents who have served a full term did not attend their successor's inauguration (I couldn't find who the others are).

[up] Why, what's wrong with it? Colbert was quoting it as well.

The Daily Mail is a UK Trash Paper, like the New York Post but worse.

It is not a reliable source. If they said Water was wet I'd demand 2 respectable sources.

The fact that it's only being reported in the Daily Heil and other tabloids indicates it's not fine.

If it was in any way reliable, you'd find it in other less problematic media.

Then take this as a lesson to pay attention to media sources, and to not take everything a talented comedian says as gospel. Even Stephen Colbert makes mistakes.

Speaking of Colbert's show, he had Abrams on it recently and she talked about how her main priority was creating a sustainable infrastructure in the state that would allow it to function for the democrats even when there weren't races.

I really hope the democrats follow her advice and someone puts some effort into flipping other red states with demographic shifts.

If the Daily Mail is citing unnamed sources in a salacious article there’s a pretty good chance those sources are made up.

So the Supreme Court begins oral arguments today on the unconstitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. It is likely to last several months into 2021. When Biden will be president.

Is there any chance Biden can do something to save it, or does the SC have the final say and when it's gone, it's gone for good?

My wife will die without the ACA. Other friends will. I probably will. Don't you dare suggest I'm not taking this seriously.

The idea of a President influencing a SCOTUS decision is pure evil. Imagine the horrors Trump would have brought on us if he could.

Besides, if the POTUS had that kind of power in the first place over the SCOTUS, I'm pretty sure the ACA would already be gone by now.
