The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Trump has no out right now. The military isn't siding with him, and neither are the courts.

All major news outlets and 99% of world leaders have recognized Biden as President-elect.

So this is all just publicity. Hope this results in the Republican voters not showing up for the run up elections. tongue

I'm familiar with a Youtube history channel who has the biggest hate-boner for Woodrow Wilson. Which, by going into detail, is understandable. Prior to this, as a Canadian, he was just the American President during the First World War. He's certainly no FDR.

And Reagan. How he’s so popular will elude me and my parents.

It's mostly marketing, from what I understand. Reagan put a nice veneer on ugly things.

Also yeah, this whole "IT'S RIGGED!!!" thing with trump is unlikely to sway the election. Trump's lawsuits aren't even going to reach the Supreme Court like he wants, and even if they did, it's questionable whether they'd validate him. They're mostly conservative partisans yes, but they're much more liable to care about what Mc Connell wants than what Trump wants, they have no loyalty to him.

The reason why it's bad is because it damages people's trust in the process and sets a bad precedent for presidential behavior. There was a survey posted just now that if accurate, suggests their trust in democracy was considerably eroded by this election - although it's for entirely the wrong reasons.

So when the results are certified, are the Republicans going to continue this narrative? Are they going to call Biden a "fake President" after he is inaugurated?

[up] I wouldn't be surprised if they keep paying some kind of lip service to that in order to fire up their base, personally.

[up]x3 Almost certainly. Remember most of these people said Obama was "not their President" for his first term.

Regan I think gets a lot of credit for being President at the end of the Cold War.

While obviously the end of the Cold War was bigger then Regan, given that the failure state of the Cold War was "the destruction of human civilization, if not the human species", ending it without the failure state occurring was kind of a big deal.

If these last few years have taught me anything, it's that coming across as personally "nice" and friendly doesn't mean someone is really a good person.

Example: Utah. I've been there. Almost everyone I met was pretty kind and generous, but that state mostly voted for Trump. It's almost hard for me to reconcile.

The kindest interpretation is a lot of people flat out do not see racism as Trump's primary appeal.

But I'm not sure how anyone CAN at this point.

Basically because they deny that he is racist. There is a lot of denial going on in voting for Trump, and perhaps a lot of it was already there with Republicans, but it just sticks out more with Trump.

It goes into people being thought "Republicans axiomatically good, Democrats axiomatically bad" I think.

Here we talk a lot about Republicans having no standards but, strictly speaking, I don't think that's the case. They have standards but because of the media bubble they're likely to live in, they're highly predisposed to believing literally any bad thing about any Democrat, and disbelieving it about any Republican.

That's why I've been saying that a lot of this problem is on right-wing media that just keeps feeding them hatred and fear 24/7. It's not a coincidence that there's a lot of anecdotes from people that feel like they're "losing" their older relatives to Fox News.

Once you get deep into that bubble, it's hard to come out because you essentially start living in an alternate reality where up is down.

Yeah, we can't blame Trump voters entirely when they are consistently being misled by the media they are told to trust, while being told to distrust media that says anything else.

They choose their media to consume.

[up][up] We can still laugh at them and Fox News though as they start to believe even Fox News is fake because of calling Arizona for Biden.

It's a little weird to think about that a lot of the US's problems are because of some obscenely rich australian guy funding a bunch of lies.

Why did Rupert Murdoch pay for Fox News to begin with? I think it's vaguely something to do with Nixon and wanting to compete with CNN when they were new, but I'm not sure.
