Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hmm, I wonder if Trump has any plan with the new Secretary of Defense? Some kind of futile last ditch coup?

Moral of the story: don't disrespect war heroes and don't tell the troops to attack Americans.

Continue writing our story of peace.Do we know if Biden has any plans for tackling white supremacist terrorism? I would not at all be surprised if the next four years see an uptick of that sort of activity in response to a federal government agenda that doesn't go out of its way to turn a blind eye to their antics.
Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!- Mocking gold star families
- Calling them losers and suckers
- Mocking Prisoners of War as losers
- Being a draft dodger himself
- Abandoning our allies in Syria
- His cozying up to the Taliban
- His ignoring of the Russian bounties
- The fact the Joint Chiefs have called him an idiot who tried to start wars in Venezuela, kill Assad via drone strike, and attack Iran only to be talked down.
- Pardoning a war criminal turned in by his own SEAL team.

If he does, it had better be a swift and efficient one that he can implement very early on, lest his entire term be defined by the very same identity politics that turn so many working class whites against the Democrats. He'd need at least two years afterward to get people's minds on something else.
Speaking of, allegedly part of why Trump was so keen to fire Esper (to the point that Esper actually drafted a letter of resignation a week before the firing) is over Esper's public reticence about sending US troops into cities to quell rioting
.
“I say this not only as secretary of Defense, but also as a former soldier and a former member of the National Guard, the option to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role should only be used as a matter of last resort, and only in the most urgent and dire situations. We are not in one of those situations now,” Esper said.
Hours after Esper’s statement, White House press secretary Kayleigh Mc Enany said Trump has the “sole authority” to move forward with the measure. When asked if the president was peeved by Esper’s comments at the Pentagon, Mc Enany gave a lukewarm response.
“I would say if he loses confidence in Secretary Esper I’m sure you all will be the first to know. As of right now, Secretary Esper is still Secretary Esper, and should the president lose faith, we will all learn about that in the future,” Mc Enany said at the time.
McConnell was on TV just now saying Trump is "within his rights" to pursue his lawsuits, and compares these current events to Bush v. Gore.

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite. It seems Mc Connell is afraid of the Georgia vote.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters."Within his rights" in that context sound a lot like defaulting to the free speech defense: "I am literally allowed to do this." If that's the best retort you've got, why bother pushing the "point"?
My musician pageI don't think Mitch expects Trump's lawsuits to go anywhere. He's already accepted Biden as the new president. This sounds more like a middle stance between Graham and Cotton talking about the election being rigged, and Romney and Bush saying Biden won already.
That being said the fact that he's comparing this to Gore vs Bush is deeply dishonest. Biden won over Trump by margins several magnitudes higher than Bush supposedly won Florida in 2000.

Mitchy boy is just releasing non-statements about these lawsuits.
Continue writing our story of peace.I don't necessarily think Mitch is out of the woods yet. Him breaking with Trump could cause anger among Trump supporters, reducing his popularity. And I bet there are executive options that Biden could take while in office to prevent Mitch from becoming a full-on Karma Houdini.

I admire the optimism, but even my best case estimates have the base forget about everything in six years. And that's ignoring that Mitch completely has Kentucky in his grasp.
Not all of Trump's base are idiots. Some are smart enough to know and remember that Mitch "ditched" Trump after he lost. I think they would continually call for Mitch to step down due to not being a die-hard Trumpie, and that the rest of the base would follow these calls as well.
To be honest, I don't think the Alt-Right would resort to Senate primaries to get the "RINOS" out. A lot of their members might run all sorts of harassment campaigns in the hope that those they deem "unworthy" to their cause resign and thus are replaced with someone "better" in their eyes.

I never expected the Gravy Seals to actually take to violence.
They may yet encourage a lone wolf to act but, en masse? You seriously expect these military fetishists who can't briskly walk a mile to shoot someone farther away from their kitchen?
