The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think the reason this effort by Trump isn't being taken seriously, the incompetence of his team aside, is that most Republicans realize it's a battle on too many fronts. Bush was a damn lucky situation that required a lot to go right (and underhanded BS, so much BS). In this scenario, Trump has to invalidate four different states, and that's just not a realistic goal. They'll make hay, but the situation that would lead to a crisis is very unlikely.

I wouldn't remotely worry about trump getting a last minute victory whether through the courts or anywhere else.

It's over. The republicans ( with a handful of exceptions like cotton and graham) have already accepted it's over and are looking long term to undermine biden. Trump doesn't have competent people working under him, he has people like Ghouliani and Kushner who are punchlines.

Whether it's faithless electors, the supreme court or whatever people dreaded, it's not going to happen, because the GOP at large has already willed Biden to become president.

All of this is just grifting and tantrums by a manchild who was never taught how to accept that he can't always get his way. He's going to lose whether he likes it or not. People are already ignoring him and moving on.

I don't even know why graham is humoring trump anymore.

Originally Graham was more congratulatory/supportive to Biden, such as saying he would support Biden's picks, but then when Trump JR started yelling at Republicans is when he switched to attacking Biden.

My guess is Graham is going to try to run in 2024 for President and he wants to be on Trump's good side not his bad side.

The concept of Lindsay Graham running for president is startling but it makes a unnerving amount of sense. The man has no spine to speak of.

Sadly Trumpism isn't going away any time soon. So for now we're gonna just have to watch the Republicans fight over who gets to be its next leader, and thus the party leader.

All the diehard Trumpeteers including the Trump family are screaming left and right on social media about fraud and how the orange cheeto will win in a supreme court ruling. Man, makes me want to see the SCOTUS dismiss their allegations outright just to see these deluded, smug fucks squirm even more.

If he somehow took it to the SCOTUS and some of the extreme ideologue judges ruled in favor of him despite everything, would that be grounds for impeaching them and removing them from office, or at least forcing through judicial reform because what we have is clearly broken?

It's not even worth considering because of how insane and impossible such a scenario is. It would rely on five Justices throwing out processes that have existed and been endorsed since the beginning of the United States and pulling off a coup to install a man who lost the election by all metrics. Even if five justices were partisan enough to decide to destroy their own credibility, they would be smart enough to realize that they would probably wind up being dragged out by a lynch mob for pulling off a coup.

If somehow that happened then that's game over. American Democracy is dead, the Republicans in the Senate would be able to block any attempt at impeachment, Trump will be President despite losing the election, a majority of the Supreme Court will have decided to abandon all pretenses of caring about the law, and riots will break out all over the country.

But again, not worth considering about because there is no way 5 justices are going to pull off a coup for Donald Trump.

Yeah a coup attempt might well be grounds for the Virginia National Guard to kick in the doors of the Supreme Court and arrest said judges for sedition, thus why it’s not going to happen.

That's honestly why I sort of hope a few of the worst justices try it, so they can be swiftly removed and hopefully replaced.

As much as it would be cathartic, I am not sure that sic'ing the military onto the judiciary is the best option on the table...

Judicial overturn of the results or states sending incorrect slates of electors are scenarios that only hold plausibility when it's close. As it's not close, this suddenly requires coordinated action across multiple state lines and dozens of layers of power for... what? A loose cannon who's served his purpose for the right?

The cultists can't get the support of the pragmatists so it won't go anywhere.

[up][up] Oh certainly, the best option will always be that the judiciary respects democracy and doesn’t try and stage a coup. And All indicators point towards them respecting democracy.

[up]X3 We’ve no reason to believe they’re stupid enough to stage a coup at all, never mind one they knew would fail.

It's actually pretty well established that the current SCOTUS does not respect democracy.

There are different levels of disrespecting democracy. All indicators are that they sit somewhere after “willing to weight the system” but before “will stage an open coup”.

x5 When are they usually supposed to do [certify Biden as president-elect]?

I would imagine no later than January 6th, when the new Congress receives the Electoral College's votes, counts them, and agrees that he does in fact have a majority and thus is the president-elect.

I mean, they could declare something sooner, but that's kind of the end point where all the official steps of deciding the next president are done.
