Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah. That's why, far as I'm concerned, there's no real point in criticizing Biden until and unless he actually does something we don't like.
Until we get to that point, how far Left he is or isn't is irrelevant. Biden at his worst would still be preferable to Trump at his best.

I heard Dave Chappelle told Democrats to be humble last night, and I keep thinking about how the only stand-up comedian I saw make fun of the Four Seasons Total Landscaping mess on Twitter was Patton Oswalt, and I just sort of feel angry at the stand-up comedy world right now.

I see we're already criticizing Biden for not doing enough at -73 days. That's got to be a new record.
Harris/Abrams '24!
Yeah, I know that would never fly but I can dream.
On a different topic Abrams better get a cabinet seat out of this. She's a big part of why Biden won Georgia. I'm thinking Education could use someone smart to fix DeVos's fuckups

I'd rather she be head of the DNC, because that labyrinthine mess of an organization could use a whole lot of swamp-draining and dramatic change in how it turns out the vote. Not to mention Abrams is quite progressive but also knows how to play ball with inflexible centrist elites.

Single Transferable Vote with multi-member constituencies. You get more proportional representation without sacrificing locality of representatives; although the actual goal of such a system is that the representatives returned most accurately represent the wishes of the voters than anything.
The Biden-Harris Transition Plan
website is up. Listed priorities are: COVID-19, Economic Recovery, Racial Equity, and Climate Change, with broad goals for each.
Good to see that race is immediately on the agenda.
So I heard a political commentator say that the vice president is not really that important, and the appointment to look out for is the Chief of Staff. So is there any indication who that might be? Any candidates?
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI know there’s been discussion around which of Biden’s past chiefs of staff is likely to get the job, but I can’t remember what the names are.
As for the VP not being powerful, the VP has as much power as the president wants to to have, so they can be very powerful, and Biden has certainly been indicating he’s going to give Harris lots of power.

Another thought on the election. Probably comes across as a "no duh" statement but it needs to be said regardless.
You know why so many people are ecstatic that Biden won, even if he wasn't some people's first choice? Because they were terrified of Trump. Terrified of his policies, terrified of his rhetoric, terrified of the people he empowers, and terrified of the implications of pulling out of major alliances with the rest of the world, while cozying up to dictators.
...We should not be terrified of our president. The president works for us, we don't work for them. Biden gets that. Trump's all about what's in it for him, and let the power go to his head. Being terrified of your president is a dictatorship.
