Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

My sister-in-law is pro-Biden. My brother is a right-leaning nihilist who didn't vote but who wanted Biden to win because he thinks Biden will give him money. My mother probably voted Biden. My father, I suspect, voted Trump but I don't think he's a fanatic about him either. My sister and brother-in-law apparently voted for Trump, likely on the issue of abortion-they're very pro-life and have gone through...a lot involving a complicated pregnancy. My paternal grandma is definitely pro-Biden, her husband is definitely pro-Trump.

Leviticus 19:34Speaking of which, I don't know how much of it is really genuine (you can never tell with all the bots and such running around) but the sheer delusion I saw on social media about how successful Trump was going to be this election was baffling to me. I saw some electoral maps that had trump winning the majority of blue states, even flipping democratic strongholds like california.
It's just a baffling level of detachment from any kind of empirical reality since all signs pointed at most to a modest electoral college win thanks to polling errors in key states, it was never realistic to expect anything else.
Like, these are probably the same kind of people as that one guy from news footage who talked about a "Biden crime family stealing the election" or whatever. Just no fucking idea what's going on in the world and completely buying all of Trump's BS.
I said it before, but I can't wait to see Donald Trump dragged out of the office, screaming, flailing his arms like a petulant brat. Well when the January comes.
He should be put in a solitary confinement for life. That'll do a number on his Attention Whore tendencies. Of course, giving glances at many posts here, that's an unrealistic prospect, but hey I can fantasize...
Go Biden!

In the words of Anderson Cooper, we have to watch "an obese turtle on his back flailing in the hot sun, realizing that his time is over".
"They played us like a DAMN FIDDLE!" — Kazuhira Miller, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom PainThe turtle analogy is funny considering Mc Connell exists. Maybe the GOP should change their mascot into one.
There is something wrong with the Trump family.
Context: Dan Slott discovers that Trump Junior never refers to his dad as his dad.

My immediate family are all solid Democracts, and this was the first presidential most of us voted in. I think most of my extended family also voted Biden, barring one or two cousins.
EDIT: I feel should probably mention the reason we didn't vote before is a combination of not being old enough [me and my siblings] & not being a citizen [parent]. If I could have voted in 2016, I would have.

For context, the link ![]()
is a photo of a tweet by Trump Jr that reads "The media spent five years falsely calling Trump a racist and a misogynist and yet he increased his support with women and every minority group. Trump’s GOP is a massive tent of working Americans.". This prompts the reply of "You call your father 'Trump'?". Someone else relpies "No, I call him My President." which prompts the first person to ask "You call your father 'My President'?"

My household is all Democrats, so we enjoyed this a lot. Other extended family aren't, and we try not to pay attention to them.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"My whole family voted for Biden, particularly my brother in law, who's black. My dad is a bit right leaning, but he does support Democrats depending on the candidate, and he voted for Biden this year, same as the rest of us. He laughed when the election was finally called. My uncle, on the other hand, is pretty conservative, and is a big Trump supporter, thinks the pandemic was blown out of proportion and exaggerated by the Democrats. It's led to a bit of a rift between him and Dad, unfortunately. My other uncle, well, we don't pay attention to him, but I'd be surprised if he cared about politics at all.
"What do we say to the God of Death? Sean Bean is over there."A lot of cities are out now celebrating Biden's victory. Did Obama get the same treatment when he first became President? I don't remember or recall anything similar.
As for my family, I think I was the only one that voted, though my mom is glad that Biden won and she doesn't like Trump for obvious reasons. I know my stepdad voted Trump in the last election, but I'm not sure if he voted again or not.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order. My immediate family are all pretty solidly Democratic, and the responses to the outcome have been either celebratory (my sister, and my brother who's currently in D.C. and said they were setting off fireworks when the race was called, comparing it to the liberation of Paris), cautious (my mother, who's very glad Biden won, but concerned about the Georgia senate runoff), or depressed (my dad, who feels that the number of people voting for Trump, especially in this state, is a sign that he's failed at his job as a history professor, somehow).
they're gonna find intelligent life up there on the moon/and the canterbury tales will shoot up to the top of the best-seller list![]()
I like the explanation given by Elie Mystal
. Obama had the "I didn't think I'd live to see this" election, whereas Biden has the "I didn't think I'd survive to see this" election.
So like IIRC there was a lot of celebration when Obama was elected, but it has a bit of a different tenor than the celebration now.

It's a good analogy. We survived Trump, like disaster victims emerging blinking from the rubble after the rescue teams finally arrive.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Kushner is approaching Trump about conceding now.
I've seen Biden described as a bandaid, but I hope he'll be closer to a tourniquet. Bandaids don't do much to help you when you're bleeding out, and that's kiiiinda what we're doing with Trump. Biden, at the very least, will likely fill all the vital departments with qualified people, which will do a lot to stop the bleeding.
I also gotta admit, I wouldn't mind if Biden gets an outsized share of negative flack for Republican obstructionism as long as it doesn't get transferred to the Democrats at large and he doesn't run for re-election. Whoever has to fix Trump's messes wouldn't be popular, better to recognize it and plan to eat the disapproval so the next person can push further.

That I know of (since I don't exactly go around asking people who they voted for), only one family member of mine voted for Trump, and they have told me on a few occasions that it wasn't one of their prouder moments. Frankly their vote was more of an "anti-Hillary" vote anyway. I didn't ask who they voted for this time around- even though they weren't crazy about either candidate, I can't imagine they would've gone for Trump again. A lot of his attacks really rubbed them the wrong way, especially towards John McCain.
