The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, I like beer, I just think it's an impractical ratio of alcohol content to cost, and the beer I like is not generally sold in shops this far north so I'll stick with sweeter things. And I hate bitter things.

I just never had that sort of reaction to alcohol the first time I tried it (including as an adult), so the common reaction I see on the internet is interesting to me.

I bought two separate twelve packs of Sam Adams this week. sad

I split them with my brother, though, I didn't drink them alone. [lol] And due to stress, I ironically could only bring myself to have a couple on Election Night itself. The rest of the beer has been incredibly celebratory.

What I'm doing? Feeling, for the first time in 4 years, a truly stress free day. It feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

Another thing I find incredibly vindicating about this whole thing is getting to watch Trump squirm. I'm not the type of person to really enjoy people suffering, even people I don't really like much. But Trump is an insufferably spoiled and unpleasant man who's never had to actually take responsibility for anything, and who's wreaked untold havoc on the wellbeing and political culture of not only the US, but the world. On a personal level, he emboldened Bolsonaro to run for the presidency and run my country into the ground with his incompetence and malice. It's nice seeing him finally have to endure some form of genuine retribution for his actions.

Maybe he won't go to jail or have all his shit seized like people are hoping, and it's unfortunate this wasn't as big a repudiation as people wanted, but it's nice to know that he'll always have to live with the infamy of being a one-term president who was hated and booed on his way out. Even Bush didn't have that happen to him AFAIK, and his approval rating was much worse than Trump's by the time Obama was elected.

I also don't think there was any particular enmity towards Bush Sr, who like Trump was also a one term president.

I'm so proud of my girlfriend's home state. We were holding our breath out for Pennsylvania. Her dad died of COVID this October, and we are so glad Pennsylvania was decisive in defeating the shitstain who killed her father.

Get fucked, Donald. Kindly let the doors hit you on your way out.

For once, I'm enjoying a slew of memes popping up all at once.

This Avengers one has Biden as Captain America, Trump as Thanos, and all the snap backed Avengers and allied forces arriving as "Mail In Ballots" and the votes of different groups.

[up][up]I'm sorry to hear about that.

On that note, in honor of PA I have actually added "visit Philadelphia at least once" to my bucket list...assuming the US manages to have a stable government that guarantees basic rights for immigrants by the time I have the means to get there. Seems like a great city from what I hear.

So how is everyone's families here reacting to the results? I know we had many here whose families are diehard Trump supporters, so I am a bit worried on how they are taking it.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

Trump is one of the few people to have burned through every shred of empathy I have to the point I want to see him suffer. I will enjoy his disintegration.

My dad seems O.K. He's watching the news right now and, like me, he voted for Biden.

Edit: I will deny nobody their schadenfreude because this wasn't politics as usual. This was killing Majin Buu with the Spirit Bomb, Jotaro destroying Dio, Judai defeating Darkness, Sora taking down Ansem.

This was the defeat of a monster that's been plaguing the country and beyond for four years.

Friend's family are...depressed more than anything. Personally me and him feel that they should be getting publicly shamed for even voting for Trump to begin with, but we're content that they've actually shut up for once.

My father and my brother's family are conservative. I don't know my brother's feelings on Trump in particular, nor is he on social media, but my father compared his wife to a MAGA hat in a way that was obviously meant a complementary. I saw a few post Trump posts as election day started up, as I looked at Facebook out of curiosity, but haven't seen anything on my timeline the last couple days from him.

My extended family in California voted for Trump in 2016. Haven't been in contact with them for a long time, so I have no idea who they voted for this year. And frankly, I don't want to know. I can forgive them for 2016, because then there were still reasonable doubts that they didn't know better. But, if they are still supporting Trump now, then I will consider them lost to me. But this prospect really pains me, because my great aunt and uncle are genuinely kind and loving people to me and our own family, so it will be very difficult to reconcile that if they indeed still haven't learnt anything. But I'm not having much hope, because I know for a fact that my dad, who is closer to them than I am, likes Trump and thinks he's great.

My direct relatives are all Democrats, even if my dad is more of a DINO. I have some Trump-supporting extended family via grand-aunts and grand-uncles and their children, but while some of them have Trumpian fascist beliefs, a lot of their Republicanism is more an artifact of Cold War politics that never went away.
