The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Edit: What's everybody doing for celebrations?

Drinking champagne.

Normally, I'd buy the cheapest thing available, but seeing Trump lose is a special occasion, so why not make sure it actually is champagne? [lol]

I bought a nice sandwich and treated myself to a soda to celebrate. Maybe after four days of stressing out over this I can finally get some work done (and I'm not even a US citizen tbh, I can't imagine how you all must have felt up there).

[up][up][up][up] That. I'm an European that started to follow US Politics around late last year/early this year. The politics of the US has shockwaves towards the entire world, so I find it very important.

[up][up] I understand that, but at the same time, that also means you of all people should know how awkward it must feel to waltz into a room of people and speak to them patronizingly as if you're the veteran host and they're a bunch of newcomers.

I doubt you'd appreciate it if an Eagleland American started posting in the European Politics thread telling the resident French posters all about how they should interpret French politicians.

I bought some wine to celebrate. Took a few sips and stopped because I don't actually like wine, I just felt the occasion called for it.

If you have some (actually a lot) of time, the rest of this thread is actually a pretty nice read. I started with Trump's 2016 election, around pg. 6000, before I started posting here. Lots of news links get posted and there's quite a bit of debate as well.

This was once upon a time the 2012 election thread. We didn’t even used to have a thread for general US politics. Simpler times man, simpler times. tongue

Oh and someone asked about the remaining races, as the pinned post in the results watch thread says, we don’t get any updates out of Alaska or North Carolina until next week.

I started frequenting this thread and becoming more informed about US politics around the time of the 2016 election too. I'd probably credit that election to contributing significantly to my personal politics since it was really eye-opening to see how much explicit racism still existed in the US, and it made me pay more attention to that sort of thing in my own country.

It’s nice to be able to finally relax.

The Dems taking the Senate is a very, very long shot (boo Maine!), so I’m expecting that there will be a Republican Senate and Biden’s ability to act will be limited (esp. re: the judiciary) but he’ll be able to do a fair amount nonetheless, and the US having a rational, non-narcissist president who accepts democracy is a great relief.

I don't drink much wine, as I have a low tolerance for it. But I did let myself splurge on a juicy hamburger for dinner.

[up][up] 2016 is the election that helped me finally realize my political views belonged on the left side of the spectrum as opposed to dawdling in the nebulous miasma of self-described centrism which was holding me back from properly expressing my actual beliefs.

Im not even sure what happened in Maine honestly? I wasn't keeping track of that race but wasn't Collins pretty unpopular?

AlleyOop Since: Oct, 2010
#338043: Nov 7th 2020 at 6:28:59 PM

She took a large hit, but she probably enjoyed a high enough amount of native popularity that it wasn't enough to cost her the seat.

Also, while Maine is a "blue" state in presidential elections, it also has quite a few conservatives, even if they tend to be more libertarian than theocratic or corporatist. Don't forget it's the state that elected someone as racist as Governor Le Page. I can easily see that libertarianism translate to a split that votes for Biden over a fascist like Trump, but also prefers "moderate" Republican in downballot races.

[up][up] I can't help but wonder if the ACB no vote, useless though it was, allowed Collins to burnish her moderate image at the last minute?

After all, she did get 68.5% of the vote in 2014, so there were a bunch of people who had supported her before.

[up] Although, LePage was due to a Democratic/Independent vote split. He won with a plurality.

The one time I tried alcohol, I thought it was completely gross, and it's not the sort of thing where being scared off by one bad experience seems like a bad thing. So I have no intention of changing my teetotaler ways tonight. But if not for the pandemic, I'd definitely be going out somewhere nice to eat as a celebration. I've been relaxing since Thursday when the outcome became pretty clear, but there's still a big psychological difference in actually seeing the results called.

I'll probably plan something more elaborate for Inauguration Day (which is, incidentally, about a week before my birthday), since that's more predictable.

Not as unpopular as we hopped. She seems to have gotten the support of a number of Biden voters, having 50-51% of the vote.

You know, I always did find it interesting that so many people report how alcohol was terrible to them on first impression. I could agree with that... if we regard my first impression as when I was a small child and it was the usual adult "see how terrible beer is?" thing. [lol]

Never did bother me that much.

The younger you are, the worse bitter stuff tastes. If you drank beer or something at a very young age, it will probably not appeal to you.
