The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Jim Carrey did a funny Biden impression on a SNL debate sketch.

Nothing about Trump firing the heads of the agencies that oversee the nuclear weapons stockpile, electricity and natural gas regulation, and overseas aid? Seems like a big deal to me. Mary Trump, his progressive psychologist niece, predicted that he would try to take the country down with him, and that's what it looks like he's doing there.

I don't believe this has been posted, but preemptive apologies if it has been.

Schumer has revealed that in Biden's first 100 days in office they'll push for an ambitious set of policies

Admittedly most of them will be out of reach if we fail to take the Senate but one won't be. He's revealed that Biden will cancel $50,000 worth of student debt for each American via executive order.

Not only would this be amazing but it shows a level of Executive Order ambition that Obama lacked, it's comparable to FDR and that's an excellent sign.

It’s him being super petty and trying to get rid of as many qualified people as possible so as to harm Biden and Americans generally, but it’s a tactic of institutional degradation, not any grand scheme involving actually setting the nation on fire or anything.

If he goes for the more traditional narcissist breakdown we may find that a number of priceless relics/works of art in the White House have been broken/destroyed.

The differences between how Biden views the office of president versus how Trump views it are night and day. Biden is humbled that so many people voted for him and vows to be president for everyone, not just those who voted for him. Trump feels entitled to be president and is only president for his base.

I genuinely wouldn't put it pasts Trump to try and damage the resolute desk, he’s exactly that petty.

My only question would be what method he’d go for, setting the desk on fire? Trying to break it in half somehow? Defacing it with a knife or something? Leaving a turd in a draw?

I think he'd rather steal it than destroy it. My grandfather's been saying for years that they're going to need to check on the White House silverware when Trump leaves.

Actually, come to think of it, does the White House "come" with silverware? Is there "official" White House silverware that the president is expected to leave when they move out?

Re Biden and comedy, I don't particularly like the Jim Carrey portrayal, because Jim Carrey's manic energy doesn't really fit Biden (to be honest, I can't think of any real world person off-hand, expect maybe Tom Cruise for which that would be appropriate).

Biden has a folksiness to him that is IMO endearing, but kind of suits itself to comedy because of the sense that what he's describing is old fashioned / may not actually have happened. It makes for a very similar joke as any number of Simpsons scenes where Grandpa Simpson or Mr. Burns discuss "old timey things".

One real Biden example that comes to mind is his story about "Corn Pop" which surprisingly turned out to be completely true.

The real Biden was in Parks and Recs much to my surprise, not sure if that was posted here or in the election watch thread.

I posted it a couple months ago - it was a plan by Schumer and Warren that focused on things a president could do by themselves. I'm pretty sure it was presented as a plan that could be used by Trump (not that he would), but was mainly aimed at a Biden presidency. Forbes link

The Senators called on the next President to use executive authority granted by the Higher Education Act to cancel student loan debt. "Congress, through the Higher Education Act, has already given the President and his Secretary of Education the ability to modify, compromise, waive, or release student loans," the Senators wrote. "This authority provides a safety valve for federal student loan programs, letting the Secretary use her discretion to wipe away loans even when they do not meet the eligibility criteria for more specific cancellation programs like disability discharge"

So...does this mean my sizable student loans are only a few months away from getting wiped? Because, awesome.

I think you guys are letting your fantasies get carried away again. Trump is not the sort of guy to deface things, or to blow up the country for that matter.

On another note, apparently Biden's first bid for president failed because... he plagiarized a speech, and he dropped his bid in shame. What an innocent time... grin

Given Biden's occasional propensity for exaggerated or outright fabricated stories about his history, Grandpa Simpson would not be far off the mark.
