Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

According to the NCSL (National Conference of State Legislatures): Republicans won the New Hampshire Senate and House, and likely the Alaska House, and the Montana Governorship. That gives them an additional 3 trifectas. Democrats gained none, falling short in the Minnesota Senate, the Texas House, the Iowa House, in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Wisconsin.

Republicans now have complete control over 23 states, compared to 15 for Democrats, with 12 states having a split government.

The historical average is for a dozen legislative chambers to change hands each election cycle. In 2010, Republicans won control of 20, putting them in the driver's seat for redistricting in the last decade. Counting their victories last year in the Virginia House and Senate last year, it looks like Democrats have made a net gain of one chamber for the cycle.

The gains Republicans cemented with the 2010 election are still largely fixed in place.

Polizzi says Democrats will still head into redistricting in 2021 in better shape than they were back in 2011. The party's gains in 2018 will give them control or protect them in some states where they retain the governor's veto.

Republicans like the hand they're holding. Democrats have long complained that unfair partisan gerrymanders have kept even purple states from being competitive, but they have mostly been unable to change that equation.

Yeah, I'm not super thrilled to hear about the Republicans having full control of 23 states. That's really bad. The downballot for democrats this election has been really disappointing.

Democrats have had to break 2010 Republican gerrymanders in a whole lot of states. The things that are shifting towards them (mostly suburbs) are moving slower than the places running away from them (mostly rurals). So they're left with a big structural disadvantage. I thought 2020 would be the year things broke in their favor, but looks like I was wrong about that.

2010 and 2014 will be some of the bitterest midterms for Democrats from a long term perspective. The losses they sustained then have allowed Republicans to create enormous unfair systemic advantages (gerrymandered maps, the stacking of the courts) that have given them control and power even when they're in the minority and destroyed democratic norms.

What I meant specifically was that Trump would still be in power for several months, and could conceivably still use his power in some ways, likely not good ones.

As for fleeing the country, the FBI is likely not able to stop him unless they get explicit orders for it. Trump could just dismiss them, for one, if it came to that.

Trump can’t fly a plane, the secret service won’t let him on a regular flight, the only way Trump leaves the country is if the secret service fly him out on an official diplomatic visit somewhere.

I’m pretty sure that the State Department are capable of spending a couple months loosing the paperwork on any visits Trump tries to have them schedule.

Trump can buy a ticket. There are no charges against him serious enough to restrict his travel privileges.

He’s not even allowed to drive, the secret service aren’t driving him to an airport for a commercial flight due to the very obvious security risk of such an act.

Trump isn’t going to sneak out the back of the White House and hightale it to an airport.

He’s don’t need charges, being president alone restricts his travel privileges heavily, simply on security grounds.

It’s not about criminal charges, the president isn’t allowed to get a cab, he’s not allowed to fly in a commercial plane, he’s not allowed to drive, that’s just a basic rule of being president, even former presidents aren't allowed to drive.

I think the idea is that he'd leave the country after he leaves office but before he faces charges. Like that he'd hop on his 757 and fly to some other country on Jan 21 and not come back.

All he has to do is deny the Secret Service detail. Although all this is probably silly, he still have millions of dollars and can afford to hire the best attorneys. The actual odds of him having to face any real jail time are very low.

His secret service protection doesn't go away after he stops being president, so the secret service would fly with him. Their presence would also rather screw up any escape plan, what with them being police and all.

Hell I’m not even sure if former presidents can fly commercial, they probably also are only allowed to certain countries if not on official government business.

All he has to do is deny the Secret Service detail.

At which points he’s so blatantly telegraphed his plan that he can probably get put on a no-fly list. Hell I’d be shocked if former-presidents weren’t on one anyway for national security reasons.

But he is not obligated to have secret service protection after leaving office. He (and any other ex-president) could simply dismiss them if he wants to, and he could always hire a private security firm if he wanted to (as could Obama, in theory). Secret service protection is a courtesy from the government, it is not mandatory.

So unless there is a specific court order against him leaving the country, he is absolutely free to do so, and no one, not even the secret service, could stop him from doing so without court orders.

... Do Republicans have a beef with Starbucks or something? grin
