Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

People also underestimate the fact that Trump has name recognition almost no one in the country has.
Trump was one of the most famous men in America as the "Generic Rich Guy" prior to 2016.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Yeah a big part of Trump’s appeal is that he’s stupid, petty and can’t stay on script.
Talking about a smart version of Trump is like talking about a fascist who doesn't openly talk about authoritarianism, sure they might have the same outcome desired, but you’ve removed a big part of what motivates their supporters.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI can imagine there are small moves in the “smarter” direction that the GOP could want, like not wanting to convince their base to act against the party’s interest with things like the mail-in ballots. But that would be quite a balancing act to not overshoot and miss the mark of talking to the base on their level.
My musician pageThe problem of 2016 is the leadership of the GOP are all basically those old gross guys from 300. They all have the charisma of wet noodles.
They need to hire another actor to be their candidate.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.A smart fascist can still be aggressive and taboo-breaking. They just need discipline and strategy behind their gleeful trashing of democracy. The Republican Party has plenty of at least minimally competent fascists, as evidenced by their respectable performance in state and federal legislatures in this election. Don't buy into the myth of the irreplaceable phenomenon, especially when the person in question is a melty-brained incompetent who was the most significant weak link in a fairly solid and effective Republican campaign.
What's precedent ever done for us?How well-known Trump is outside the U.S. varies from country to country, I will note.

If something is a meme, it isn't restricted to one country. And say what else you will about Trump, he always has been (and continues to be) very meme-able.

I was just wondering how despite Trump being a massive Jerkass throughout his presidency, why wasn't there any assassination attempt on him? I think it's because the type of people who wanted to kill a president they hated voted for him in the first place.

You pretty much got it. The two possibilities that lead to most assassinations are either being a strong force for progress (decidedly not the case) or taking away even the basic necessities (we haven’t gotten that far even though it sure feels like it).

My musician pageSo if presidents are more likely to get killed because they advocate for progress and change (Lincoln and JFK), I'm worried for President Biden's safety coming next year. It just shows that most humans are bastards.

I know it’s not the only factor, but being exposed to people of different backgrounds more frequently helps.

Being exposed to lots of different kinds of people. I lived on a military base as a child for a few years. I met so many different cultures and people that looked and had different ideas that being different has been seen as normal for me through the majority of my life.

"In a move surprising absolutely no one"Using crude, simplistic, and incendiary rhetoric doesn't make you stupid, and isn't limited as a career to stupid people. It's well known in the UK, for instance, that the most talented journalists in the country work for the Mail and Sun. That clear, simple, and appealing writing style isn't easy to produce on the regular, and they need a solid understanding of both how to perform investigative journalism against political enemies and how to make shit up in ways that won't cost their paper a meaningful amount in libel fees. The Tea Party employed some very stupid people, but that doesn't mean that it was chiefly run and directed by stupid people.
What's precedent ever done for us?

I just want to go on record as predicting that Trump will run again in 2024—as an independent. And it will be glorious.
Because, you see, the RP will have found a smarter populist by then who is less likely to go off script. And Democrat-leaning political donor will set him up as a spoiler.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.
