The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

republican "Christian" = "i want abortion to be outlawed and to be allowed to discriminate against gay people". The actual faith of the president is irrelevant as long as they get what they want.

[up][up]Feelz over realz. Trump's base thinks he's Christian and that's all that matters.

[up][up][up]Yeah, that’s something that really bugs me about the community of faith. They’d rather have somebody hypocritical and lying about having any faith than someone who’s open about not having any faith.

[up]I wonder if that’s the actual case. It feels to me like they know it, but they’re engaging in doublethink.

Yeah, Evangelicals don't give a crap that Trump has (in private) derided Christians as morons and Christianity as a scam, as long as a) He's not saying it out loud and b) He's doing things the Evangelicals want, they couldn't care less. They just want their authority implemented, even if it means they gotta do it through the Anti-Christ.

I don't think most of his base thinks he's Christian actually. It's that they don't care (or at least tolerate) him because he gets their religious and economic agenda through.

As a latino men and venezuelan, this surprise me very little, I have said trump is the most latino president ever and there is nothing more latino that vote for politican who hate you.

As for his cristianity I feel that a lot of people decide this behavor and saying are a problem of form rather than content, or to put it better: trump is cristinian because he care and pander to them, everything else is in a sort of "we agree to disagree"

Is the best example of separation between church and state: they decide trump is good because it courter them.

I've read a rather interesting explanation as to why devoted christians vote for Trump. They seemingly compare him to king David - a heavily flawed man who nevertheless did god's work. And it is understandable why someone who deeply resents abortions would vote for him on the chance that this would ultimately restrict or even ban abortions.

That is an argument that has been made but bluntly, Time did an article that strongly suggested that "flawed but doing God's work" is an excuse that Christian evangelicals are telling themselves. It's also caused a massive divide along generational lines.

Especially since it's not black or Hispanic Christians voting for Trump. It is WAS Ps and conservative Catholics.

That's their stated reason, those of them who aren't out and out cultists, but I think that's just a rationalization. The real reason is that they are reactionaries who desire the dominance of white straight men. Their Christianity is relevant insofar in that it justifies hate.

Which isn't to say that their faith plays no role, I'm sure you can find verses which justify it. Particularly when it comes to LBG Tphobia.

I'm not sure who said this, but I once heard a statement that was along the lines of "conservative christians basically filter their religion through the lens of their politics, rather than letting their religion dictate their views".

Most conservative christians would hate the actual Jesus if he was around now, because he's a middle eastern man who criticizes the wealthy. The only god they care about is Mammon.

I'm really hoping the Democrats don't try to "reach across the aisle". If anything, the Republicans have proven over the last 4 years that they should be given no leeway, no authority, no anything. Bipartisanship can never exist with them.

Latinos are not so easy to divide, but for the average perception of the U.S citizen, they are all the same.

Cubas voted in majority for the Republicans, because Cubans' whole sthick about not bein in Cuba right now is retaliation against Fidel. They reluctantly vote republican because they feel the Republicans are not harsh enough on Cuba. Paying lip ervice of "Socialism bad" will not jsut get you the Cuban support, it will get you throngs and htrongs of people willing to die shouting this message in your support.

Compared with Puerto Ricans who could give less of a fuck about Cuba and remember the dipshit president who left them abandoned in a storm.

Those are the biggest in number, but we can go on and divide them. There's all the Central Americans from wartorn areas, compared to the more wealthy braindrained ones from pockets in South and central America, etc etc...

So any thought on the news in regards to the Trump campaign urging their supporters to "FIGHT BACK!", prompting armed MAGA-Cultists to rally up outside election offices and demanding them to "count ONLY the republican votes!" while remaining armed?

Are we sure that Trump isn't attempting an militia coup against democracy while the election is still undecided?

For context, link goes to a tweet that says "Trump has shown the path for ignoring the need for Senate confirmations!", which in turn links to a different tweet that reads "🚨 🚨 scoop: McConnell, if he keeps the Senate majority, plans to prevent Joe Biden from stacking his Cabinet with liberals and force him to go with centrist options, like Lael Brainard 4 Treasury, Tony Blinken for State, sources tell ⁦@mikeallen⁩" and links to an axios article ( https://www.axios.com/gop-senate-biden-transition-50ebe6c8-e318-4fdb-b903-048908b3b954.html ) with the headline "GOP Senate wins wreak havoc on Biden transition plans"

... okay, I lied. That is not context. That is zero-context within zero-context within zero-context

Double post to page ~Septimus Heap for some clarification because the best I can figure is it involves Trump's tendency to put up "Acting" heads of departments that don't require confirmation...?

Yes, that was the one. I am not sure how legally feasible that is...

The biggest concern I have is that a number of problems need actual legislation to fix, not merely Executive Orders. And ideally not pogroms and street warfare, either.

It should be noted that that’s a state Senator, not a federal senator.

As for fighting Mitch, per the constitution it’s the VP who is the leader of the senate, senate majority leader is a made up position, Harris could possibly try and claw some powers from Mitch.

Or if Dems manage 49 seats, you put Romney and say Murkowski in the cabinet, then rush everyone else through before their replacements are seated.
