The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Only if the election is close. If it's an unambiguous Biden landslide, there isn't much they can do.

I wouldn't put it past Trump to try, though, and for the more sycophantic Republicans to push frivolous court challenges.

Well, friends, it's time for me to go to bed. I've got no work Wednesday, so I'll read comic books and play my Nintendo Switch. Then, come Thursday morning, maybe I'll finally turn on the computer and check the news. But I'll wait until then—until there's a decent chance that there will be something substantial to report.

See you later, and may the best Biden win.

If Biden won in a landslide, that'd probably just convince them even more that 'CROOKED DEMOCRATS RIGGED IT WITH FAKE VOTES STUFFED IN THERE AFTER THE ELECTION ALREADY FINISHED BECAUSE ELECTIONS HELD ACROSS A LARGE GEOGRAPHIC AREA CONSISTING OF MULTIPLE HIGHLY-FEDERALIZED LOCAL GOVERNMENT BODIES THAT EACH COUNT VOTES AT DIFFERENT RATES AND ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT RULES ALWAYS FINISH QUICKLY'

I'm so glad that I voted early as I heard a report on Facebook that the candidate for a local race was harassing voters at the polling station nearby my place.

So I'm checking The Guardian periodically for updates, and I have to ask - how are a few States called when less then 1/3 of the results are in?

[down][down]

Well, for one particular oddity, they're currently calling Virginia for Biden, despite the current votes standing at 40.7% for Biden, 57.6% for Trump. And they're apparently pulling their data from the AP.

Because which way those states were going was never in question, I assume would be the answer.

Its because the way those states were going was never in question, if the existing 1/3rd follows the path that was going to happen there is no point in waiting.

Like no offence to Charles, but Kentucky going blue was just, never a posibility.

In relation to the elections, the Daily Show did a vid on whether it's a good idea to have mandatory voting.

There's such a thing in some countries, including Australia.

Watching the Dutch election show, there are plenty of interviews with Republican voters (and some Dems, of course), and there are four main points so far:

  • For many of the Republicans, it is about the policies, not the man, meaning they can disregard Trump's atrocities since Republican policies are more important.
  • Farmers are voting Republican, not because they support Trump, but because they need support now, and they feel Republicans can provide it, while the Democrats don't do enough for them.
  • A Democrat noted that while she does not like Trump, she did not actually notice all that much effects from his presidency in daily life, indicating that DC politics are far away and rarely experienced up close by the average voter who doesn't follow politics closely.
  • People find it increasingly difficult to even discuss politics with others, since both sides are increasingly polarized, indicating that this polarization is still increasing.

trump has done nothing to help farmers in the past 4 years, what makes them think that he'll start now?

Good question. We can try and find out, but that will have to wait till tomorrow, it's rather late now.

[up] That's probably part of it: not that Trump will help, but that Republicans in power will do so.

Yeah. I have to say that as described that seems like pretty pro-Trump coverage. Although not necessarily that different than the thousands of “noble Trump voters in diners” stories from the New York Times.

Not so much pro-Trump coverage as interviewing Trump supporters, which is certainly a legitimate job of reporters.

At least from your description it sounds like the coverage was to support the spin Trump voters give for their votes. And the only Democrat (at least the only one you mentioned) said Trump wasn’t that bad.

No, there was no spin given, just interviewing Republicans. And the Democratic supporter just said they did not notice much of the bad things Trump did in their daily life, which is fair enough. I mean, how many of you personally saw consequences from what Trump has done this past four years?

I think you need to distinguish how much people see of local politics, as opposed to federal politics, and that most people don't really follow politics all that much, so the vast majority of what they see they will connect to local politics rather than national.
