Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Scoop: Trump's plan to declare premature victory
.
Of course, being ahead will be entirely subjective here.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesTrump's entire plan is to declare anything counted after election day fraudulent, then take it to the courts to try and get it thrown out, even though there is obviously no basis for that. But that can delay and sow confusion and the Republican extreme scenario is "keep faffing around until December when something HAS to be certified and the state legislatures can send whoever".
Exclusive: Tired of Trump, Deutsche Bank games ways to sever ties with the president - sources
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-deutsche-bank-exclusive-idUSKBN27J0G0
Deutsche Bank has about $340 million in loans outstanding to the Trump Organization, the president’s umbrella group that is currently overseen by his two sons, according to filings made by Trump to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics in July and a senior source within the bank. The three loans, which are against Trump properties and start coming due in two years, are current on payments and personally guaranteed by the president, according to two bank officials.
In meetings in recent months, a Deutsche Bank management committee that oversees reputational and other risks for the lender in the Americas region has discussed ways in which it could rid the bank of these last vestiges of the relationship, two of the three bank officials said. The bank has over the years lent Trump more than $2 billion, one of the officials said.
One idea that has come up in the meetings: sell the loans in the secondary market, two of the bank officials said. But one of the officials said that idea has not gained traction, in part because it is not clear who would want to buy the loans and the attendant problems that come with it.
While it was known that Deutsche Bank has been closely examining its relationship with Trump, including by setting up a working group in 2016 to review the bank’s relationship with him, its recent eagerness to end all ties and the contours of discussions in light of the election have not been previously reported.
Deutsche Bank declined to comment. The Trump Organization did not respond to requests for comment. The White House declined to comment.

The Republicans are all Collins.
"They're...concerned."
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. They're afraid of losing their voters. It's that simple.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's not known for certain how much Deutsche Bank has in outstanding loans to Trump, but it's in the hundreds of millions at least. Many suspect that these loans are funded by Russian oligarchs with ties to Putin, but if Trump is no longer useful to Putin, they may hang him out to dry.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I think long-term if the "right" in the US is ever going to have a pretense of being respectable, something is going to have to be about outlets like Fox News.
It's one thing to have a conservative leaning POV, it's another to use all your airtime to promote hysteria and humor conspiracy theories like birtherism. It completely erodes their viewer's critical thinking skills and presents a totally distorted view of reality to the point some people legitimately think Trump is going to win in a landslide when at best he will eke out an electoral college win with a handful of votes in key states just like last time. The republican politicians are then beholden to these people completely and have no choice but to keep placating them with more racism and xenophobia.
I don't know what the solution to this is, honestly.
They can start by "Following program is a work of fiction. Any similarities to real people or real life events are purely coincidental and has zero relevance to the real people whatsoever..." whenever Fox broadcasts anything on their channel.
And keep this message up for ten seconds every time so the readers really can get to read through it first.

Random sidenote; I just discovered that one of the biggest distributors of pro-Trump memes on social media
, Dan Bongino, is this former Secret Service guy who worked for Obama and Bush, and he once said 'my life is all about owning the libs now'. You know, when we talked about alt-right commentators wanting to 'own the libs' I never actually thought they really said that. And it's especially surprising and a little sad hearing it come from a grown man who used to work for the Secret Service, as opposed to the teenage edgelords I typically associate it with. :V

Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!Axios:
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals rules against throwing out Harris County drive-thru votes.
Jesus fuck. My family went to the polls today and the Qcultists were trying to block people from the building . According to my sister they crowded around my 80 yr old grandparents car screaming "die of covid you old cunts" and my grandfather fought one back with a machete he keeps in his car. Police never showed up after half a dozen people called.

@Fourthspartan's post: Right. If I remember at the last debate, wasn't Biden's reply to why the Obama administration didn't get certain things done, "Republicans controlled Congress. Simple as that."
Dude was a long, long time Senator and, obviously, VP (who is technically President of the Senate and casts deciding votes when the Senate is tied). He knows this.
Exactly, the fundamental problem is that because of a lack of quality political education the average voter is not well suited to understanding the structural issues that can make implementing one's agenda difficult.
Even when it's as simple as "the other party controls Congress".
