The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Seriously, unless you're willing and able to take up arms and start a revolution, these are the choices you got. Don't be the kind of idiot that says "both candidates suck, so I'm going to stay at home" when there is an actual lunatic criminal in office.

Surely you get that Biden would be, at the very least, a lot less destructive, right?

How are we supposed to have a safe people-run country when no one in this shithole ever agrees on anything?

We can't abruptly turn off the oil pumps without precipitating an economic crisis. The world is simply not ready for that yet.

[up] People don't all agree on things. News at eleven. Keep this up and you'll get kicked out of OTC.

[up][up]It's called democracy. Sometimes it sucks. Biden has been making noise about improving voter rights, so that's a good start.

People not agreeing on everything is just life, and a guarantee in any situation that involves two or more people, never mind millions. It's part of what democracy is. If everyone agreed on everything we wouldn't need elections where people bring their disagreements to the ballot box.

Biden’s platform is the most progressive one ever, like try reading it it’s actually very good almost across the board.

The Republican platform is... non-existent. They literally didn’t make one and I do mean literally.

Good but not absolutely perfect plan vs no plan.

Two considerations:

  • The presidency isn't the cure-all for all problems. Only consider these problems which actually fall in its remit.
  • Not all morally reprehensible things are equal. Consider which person is objectively more/less harmful.

To quote my earlier post that was page-bottomed:

We do have an objectively correct candidate. His name is Joe Biden.

There is nothing so terrible about Biden that it makes a second term of Donald Trump a reasonable alternative.

Donald Trump is a boob* who proves weekly, if not daily, that he has no business in the office. Their policies don't even enter into it. Biden at his worst is still better than Trump at his best.

Alright, let me be more calm.

My parents tell me that Harris isn’t African-American, even though she was raised with the culture and is thus allowed to self-identify.

Honestly my only response to that is "and...?"

Sincerely not sure on the relevance. At least not in this exact moment, where it's a bit of a non-sequitur.

I'm not going to opine about the reason for your parents' opinion in the matter, but it is pretty poor.

Nate Cohn (NYT) on Twitter says that the RealClearPolitics (RCP) polling averages have started showing their true colors in this election, as they are deliberately timed to skew towards Trump. They should be ignored as a credible source.

Keep in mind, fracking restrictions and police reform often come down to state and local governments.

Hell Biden wants a ban on fracking on federal land, which is probably the only fracking restriction he could do easily anyway.

We should expect a Biden administration to push hard for pro-environmental incentives and regulations, such as restoring auto efficiency standards, boosting subsidies for renewable energy and zero-emission transportation, and cutting subsidies for fossil fuels.

I'm going to put out there that we shouldn't expect to see that happen immediately. Biden and his team will have their hands full just coping with the disastrous mess that Trump has made of the Federal civil service and repairing some of the most immediate humanitarian crises that he created, such as the kidnapping of children at the Mexican border.

I just wanted to say ( I am sure most of you already know this but I gotta say this anyway) Trump didn't have to go through this trouble. He COULD have used covid 19 to shut Democrats... if only he took the virus seriously AND listened to advise of Fauci. If he did he would have overwhelming support from people- well over 70%! People WOULD be willing to turn blind eyes on all the corrupt and shady thing he did earlier in his year. Democrats and Biden wouldn't have legs to stand on. BUT he was THAT dumb to give Democrats a gun to shoot him with.

Trump is an IDIOT! He isn't evil, He is just plain dumb! A power-hungry smart monarch would have taken covid seriously because it is a chance for him to be seen as a "hero."

@Silas, I think it is a No True Scotsman kind of argument, where people keep moving the goalposts for when someone can identify with a group.

As for Biden, he has a great platform, for sure. How well he will be able to reach those goals, and how hard he will actually work for them, is something that remains to be seen.

Rebuilding the federal government, controlling Covid and combating voter suppression is likely going to be top priority, rightfully so.

Like day one is probably signing a bill that recreates the pandemic response agency that Trump dismantled a year before Covid.

It makes me wonder where we'd be if we didn't have a global pandemic and economic meltdown. How big would Biden's lead be? Would it exist at all? Is Biden alone capable of achieving this lead, or would any candidate have done the same with this set of circumstances?

We have polling before the pandemic, Biden was doing good but not nearly this good. It seemed to be laying the groundwork for an election like 2016, but steadier with less chance of upsets.

The pandemic seems to have 1) made a landslide possible and 2) made Texas in play. I would include Georgia but we were close enough in 2016 that pandemic or no this might've happened.

As for Biden, he has a great platform, for sure. How well he will be able to reach those goals, and how hard he will actually work for them, is something that remains to be seen.

Whether he will be able to implement them depends if the Dems control the Senate.

I don't see any reason to doubt his personal effort, politicians do their best to implement their agenda as a rule.

Politicians also make promises they don't keep. So it becomes a question of what promises he will keep, which ones he won't, and which ones he will only sorta kinda keep.
