The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]This is the kind of news that increase my confidence a bit. The Republicans are flailing at anything they can find to try and steal the election and it's not working.

So here's a fun fact. How many people have endorsed Biden. as it turns out, a LOT. It's one of the longest articles on wikipedia.

Here's what I realised: if someone had said to Trump back in April "Mr. President, your voter base is the group who are contracting the virus the most", he would have immediately gotten into gear and not been as obstinate as he was throughout the lockdown.

Even the Soviets were consumerist.

People tried, hell Jhon Oliver had a whole segment on how one of his biger supporters was the guy in charge of a company who made PPE and he tried to cash in on that with "Hey mister president I backed you and I make masks, surely you want to buy my mask, I get a return for suporting you and you get to look like a hero"

He was ignored, and says he supports Biden now as a result.

Oh and he tried this in Febuary too, before the whole situation had been made super political and in a way that would have let Trump come to every ones rescue instead...

...

Yea the situation is that dumb

Trump won't support maks because it requires admitting he's wrong.

Harris County judge Lina Hidalgo: Harris County will be cutting back on all but one of the drive-thru polling places on Election Day as the federal judge who ruled against the Texas Republicans warned that future attempts at throwing out votes would focus on those specific locations.

Some of the replies tell the reason why: Texas election law requires a building on Election Day, but not for early voting, so the one place still open for drive-thru voting tomorrow, the Toyota Center, can still be driven through and still be counted as a building.

And 538 has frozen its predictions, 89.2% for Biden, though I wish that number was easily visible somewhere on the page. Stop rounding!

Listening to their latest podcast, apparently in the morning they had a glitch that made their map temporarily indicate that Trump had a 99% chance of taking every state and D.C.

A bit funny, I guess.

The humor of the shutdown of the centers is not lost on me.

The Republican challenge has shut down drive through voting on the one day that elderly Republican voters could and would use it.

On the whole "if republican party collapses there still needs to be another conservative party", couldn't democrat party technically just split into moderates and progressiveness instead? Righter part of democrat party is closer to conservatives in lot of countries anyway tongue

Looking at what's been happening in Europe lately it seems like the tired old "Democratic Party would be rightwing in Europe" thing isn't actually true.

That's not even getting into what the politics in East Asia are like.

I'm honestly kind of weary of people treating East Asia as not mattering.

I always figured they'd be more like the (British) Liberal Democrats. Far as I can tell, the US doesn't really have a mainstream equivalent to the Labour Party, because of the whole 'SOCIALISM BAD' thing.

I didn't see this before: The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Texas Republican's request in their appeal to completely shut down Harris County's drive-thru voting.

That's what's funny to me. Literally all fox news and Republicans do is accuse any democrat of being a radical socialist. Like that makes sense with Sanders and AOC becaus they own that label, but Harris? Biden? It's absurd. To be honest it's hard to tell how much of it is selling bullshit to their base and how much they of it they actually believe, but either way it's complete political illiteracy.

I'm reminded of how Trump was making fun of Laura Ingraham for wearing a mask at one of his super spreader events. The fact that she's trying to keep herself safe off air while spreading covidiocy on air tells you all you need to know about what the Fox hosts really think about what they say.

The Republican leadership seems to exist on projection and accusing people of what they are doing. So much so that I believe they are possibly a bunch of atheist pedophile Satanists who run a human trafficking ring and drink blood.

Looking at what's been happening in Europe lately it seems like the tired old "Democratic Party would be rightwing in Europe" thing isn't actually true.

I actually had pretty jarring run with this recently. Remember that study that was posted about how the Republicans are closer to ultra-right authoritarian parties than typical center-right Western European ones?

Well, that same study also outlined how the Democrats compare. And even though they had data in their faces telling them that's not true I still saw people repeating this claim. It was a bit surreal.
