Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At least, my memories of the time are people laughing off the possibility of a Trump victory. But then, I wasn't in this thread yet back then.
My musician pageI think it's time for my final pre-election thoughts. I don't intend to return to this thread until we get most of the election-night results.
Things are looking significantly better tonight then they did the day before the 2016 election. In addition to Biden's larger and more stable polling lead, there are simply fewer undecided voters and there is little reason to expect them to overwhelmingly break towards Trump like what happened 4 years ago.
However in this year nothing can be said to be certain. The pandemic has thrown all normalcy out the window, and with a more partisan judiciary then we had 4 years ago Trump will have the advantage in any election disputes. Exactly how much of an advantage remains to be seen, however the recent ruling in Texas indicates that this advantage will be less than absolute.
But uncertainty can cut both ways, and with early voter turnout at record-shattering levels, the possibility also exists that Biden will win by a larger-than-expected margin.
All of that being said, I think it's important to bare in mind that no matter what happens in this election, this is not the final fight. If Biden wins in a crushing landslide and brings about real positive change to America, there will be more elections to come whose outcome we cannot yet predict. If Trump wins and all of our worst fears are realized, then it's still not the end. Democracies have risen from their own ashes before, and it can always happen again if it comes to it and it may not come to that even after another 4 years of Trump.
So go vote if you haven't already and are legally allowed to, and hopefully tomorrow will be a good day.
Biden's leading with 8.4, in case anyone is wondering. Which is pretty much where 538 said he'd be by this point.
The fact that Biden's polling lead isn't even higher than it already is just shows that there are people who will continue to support his Jerkass of an opponent. I can never understand them.

"Wow, no Mega Togekiss in Legends Z-A. Or any non-Froslass new Sinnoh Mega Evolutions. Round of applause, everybody." - DawnIt's amazing comparing Biden and Trump's last speeches before Election Day.
Biden is laying out policy, telling everyone to vote, promising to represent everyone, and encouraging everyone that better days are ahead.
Trump is telling people he's going to fire his pandemic expert and bemoaning that everyone is out to get him.

Yes, that's hyperpartisanship for you. It's incredible that Biden's as high as he is.
"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangIt makes me wonder where we'd be if we didn't have a global pandemic and economic meltdown. How big would Biden's lead be? Would it exist at all? Is Biden alone capable of achieving this lead, or would any candidate have done the same with this set of circumstances?
Myself, I'm for sure staying off twitter and reddit tomorrow but I probably won't be able to help myself with the news. I also work with some very Trumpy coworkers (I actually got in a very heated argument today about Covid with them) that broadcast fox news pretty much all day so I won't be able to escape it. Hopefully Biden has some real good early results because listening to Hannity et al. jubilating just might make this election day worse than 2016.
The Trump presidency is one of the most surreal and frightening things I've ever seen. I wasn't really following the US election very closely in 2016 until near the very end and I wasn't really that knowledgeable about US politics as someone who doesn't live there (there's still a lot I don't know), but I knew enough to know how disastrous he'd be and I was just stunned that the worst happened.
Can you imagine even as little as 15 years ago saying that the next republican president would be donald trump and that he'd say and do all this horrid bullshit and still have like 40% of the electorate supporting him? Most people wouldn't take you remotely seriously, and honestly it's still hard for me to fathom the sheer delusion and gaslighting that has needed to happen in order for this to be the case.
I sincerely hope you all stay safe tomorrow and that I can wake up on wednesday morning reading about a Biden landslide that humiliated Trump utterly.
I know times are stressful, but it’s important that you watch Candace Owens be accidentally honest
.
There isn't nearly as big of a third-party threat siphoning votes.
Trump has really only lost support since 2016.
Democrats are uniformly all-in on Biden this time, whereas the left was super fractured in their support in 2016.
A list of talking points I was given by my online friend. I hope all this leads to good news.
The goldfish was actually older than either myself or my brother, that’s how he got the name, once we realised that he’d managed to live into his twenties we figured he’d only die if everything was about to go to shit.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo Obama just straight-up compared Trump to a two-bit dictator.
It's nice seeing the gloves come off. I hope more democrats are willing to actually "tell it like it is" from now on, like AOC and Jon Ossoff, who aren't afraid to speak the truth and not just pretend the republicans deserve to be respected when they do this kind of garbage.
The only thing that has moved any Trump voters is Covid, IMHO. Everything else like the racism, authoritarianism, cruelty, and misogyny is a plus in their view.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.I’m going to bed. When I wake up tomorrow I expect to be in the thick of it all, and I don’t think things will calm down until the Electoral College formally votes in December, because I truly believe Trump will contest every single aspect of this election.
Good luck America. May you not have armed militias camped in front of voting stations and threatening you.

Nevada [US District Court] Judge Blocks Republican Lawsuit That Sought To Halt Mail-In Ballot Count
In the lawsuit, Trump's campaign and the Nevada GOP alleged that they could not observe all aspects of the ballot-counting process closely enough, and wanted to install cameras to record the process.
Carson City District Court Judge James Wilson denied their request, ruling that the plaintiffs lacked legal standing to bring the case and had failed to provide evidence of "debasement or dilution of a citizen's vote."
The lawsuit requested the court mandate that Clark County Registrar of Voters Joseph Gloria stop using Agilis, an electronic ballot-sorting system. But the plaintiffs failed to show any error or flaw in the Agilis results or any other reason for such a mandate, Wilson wrote.

TBF, November 2 of last year wasn't a Presidential election.
It might be more interesting to compare this to November 2 of 2016.
Disgusted, but not surprised
