Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

never. when was the last time someone was murdered by a car?
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterWell, if Romney wins, then we will see one of two things, or possibly a mixture:
- Conservative politics have their heyday and start making things really crappy for people. The suffering this causes provokes a shift in public opinion against the GOP for a long time to come as they no longer have Democrats to blame for their own fuckups. However, the GOP does their best to stack the process against populism by restricting voting rights, putting conservative judges in office, and so forth.
- Romney ditches the hyper-conservative fiction that he's been campaigning under and governs as a centrist little different in appearance from Obama.
@ch00beh: When was the last time you drove to work in a gun? Again, I'd prefer that you discuss the matter seriously rather than throwing absurdities against the wall to see if we'll bite.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Even if Option 2 happens, I'm advocating we fight back - and don't give me any impossiblity or hopeless-sounding BS about it, either (please); I know I'm not alone in this mounting fight corporate and political evils...
EDIT - I hope this sounds a little better. I'm still angry enough to do these things, though.

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioWhen you start talking about True Justice (tm) you run into the same problem as the people talking about Our Freedom (tm). No two people can agree on the definition. Better to work on specifics, like income disparity; unequal treatment of women, gays, and minorities; corporate "personhood"; SuperPAC influence; drug laws; climate change; etc.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I am taking the argument seriously. You think solely of utilitarian purposes of things, but there are a large set of people who work on and race cars as a hobby. Their entertainment is not a strict necessity, yet the presence of idiots and nutjobs who have caused death and damage with cars does not mean we restrict the responsible owners.
Flying a plane is also a hobby of some people. 9/11 happened, yet we do not make all people with pilot licenses join the air force.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterSo basically, Romney is either worse than Obama or the same. Of course, some of those things we don't want—overturning Roe v Wade, increasing spending on the military—are things the Right does want, and I can even understand why. Don't agree with it, but I understand. The thing I don't understand is how anyone thinks electing a bully who flips more than a leaf in the wind is a good idea.
Except for people like Grizzly, who have made it clear that their vote is going to the pro-life candidate and that is the end of it.

Planes and cars have utility other than killing people. Target shooting may be "fun" but it is fundamentally training for hitting live targets; ergo it cannot be separated from the primary purpose of the weapon. You are intentionally conflating these arguments and, in doing so, debating in bad faith. Stop it.
Well, you do get a lot of single issue voters, like Grizzly with abortion (never mind that pro-choice policies provably result in fewer abortions), or gun owners with the Second Amendment. Those are people who either don't grasp or don't care about the larger issues as long as their pet issue is addressed.

...Income disparity; unequal treatment of women, gays, and minorities; corporate "personhood"; Super PAC influence; drug laws; climate change; etc... Way to put what I meant to say into perspective - and I apologize I didn't say it myself now.
Besides, I don't see this shit ever being touched upon unless we can keep scum like Romney from getting in power... Either way, no to Romney from me, even if he turns out to be a centrist; he's still no good for any of us sane thinking folk whom actually are conservative or liberal(as in know better to give power to corporations, regardless of side).
Thank you.

Nope... Don't waste your time, sir/ma'am.
But go ahead and have your opinion anyway; I know you're scared looking at how polls are going - but don't forget, so are most of us, including me.

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioSo what is the utility of violent video games besides desensitizing people to death?
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterWell, his flip-flopping while considered a major flaw, allows him to be insanely bipartisan when it comes down to it. So if he inherits a split/divided Congress, he is likely to play well with others. As long as it's politically profitable for him.
As well, his presidency WOULD have the effect of validating 'moderate' Republicans again, and potentially leech out some of the wider party's batshit fucking crazy. Though the party has sort of lost a lot of centralized control recently due to the Talking Heads, the Super PA Cs, and the Tea Party. So, w/e.
It is very difficult to find positive things to say about a Romney presidency. This is because Romney himself has made virtually no positive statements about his positions. His campaign boils down almost entirely to, "Gee, look at how Obama hasn't made everything better for people. Vote for someone else who will." Coupled with the appeal to Freedom (tm) and a bit of half-hearted pandering to social conservatives.
This is why I've concluded that Elect Me Romney is a fiction. His true self can be found in his history before running for office: at Bain Capital and his clique of rich buddies. Those are and have always been his true constituency, and I would look for his policy agenda to focus almost entirely around giving them more of what they already have, in the guise of that Freedom (tm) that he likes to sell.
Romney is the ultimate cynic.
@ch00beh: I will not engage you in this any further. First, it's a derail, second, you damn well know what the difference is and are just arguing for the sake of being stubborn. Can it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
This.
It's Exactly why I'm not voting for him, EVEN IF I was a full-blown conservative; I just wish everyone else around here would get what YOU just said through their thick skulls and realize whom they're hurting should Romney/Ryan get into power and turn out to be exactly as I feared...
EDIT - ch00beh's comments were derailing this thread? Oh... Sorry to have contributed...

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioObama finally deduced Romney's problem: He has a disease
.
Now we have to vote for him, to prove that this is a country where a mentally handicapped man can become president.
Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff."Romnesia" is awesome. I have to share that.
Edit: Maybe we could seed some "sensational" news stories in the week or two before the election. Pull a Fox News and ignore little nuances like facts. Get a story going about how, say, Romney's supporters are colluding with businesses to lay off workers to sabotage the employment numbers. It doesn't even have to be absolutely true (although, strangely, it is actually fairly accurate). Get some rumors going. Fight dirty.

Someone please tell me these numbers aren't true; tell me these arent the most trusted numbers out there - otherwise, this is what I mean by "preapre for war"!
Also, Romnesia - sums up the guy well, but my concern is how much this will be used against Obama, period...

This is where I, the Vampire Mistress, proudly reside: http://liberal.nationstates.net/nation=nova_nacioFor comparison:
Huffington Post
: Pretty much tied with around ~210 votes each, but about half the middle votes leaning Obama. Obama wins if all leans are captured.
Real Clear Politics
: Obama used to have a big advantage but now he lost most leans states to tossups. This one emphasizes mainly how Obama's advantage significantly deteriorated after the first debate.
Five Thirty Eight
: Obama's chance of winning steadily increasing after the big drop to ~60% this month.

When was the last time someone was murdered with a digital download? Be serious.
