The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

and maybe 2018 relative to other midterms?

That data point is worth considering I think. If those people bothered to pay enough attention to the midterms to vote, there's no way most of them are not going to vote in this election.

That's a different case.

That says Texas Supreme Court, the other one says Federal court.

[up][up][up] There are two lawsuits: one which was thrown out by the Texas Supreme Court and another currently being heard in a US District Court, which is what FourthSpartan is referring to.

I think the same groups are suing in both cases, though.

Dark fact on that Wyoming number, only 64% of black Wyoming’s can vote, so as a collective they have 3 (well 3.2) 5ths of the voting power they should have...

[up]6 I kind of assumed the 2018 high turnout was related to increased voting by people who typically vote in presidential elections but not in midterms. In which case it would not necessarily lead to substantially increased turnout in 2020.

I feel sorry that every single case that the Republicans throw at the courts to see what sticks will be paid by taxpayers.

Great use of public money there.

That's possible, I'd be interested to know if we have any data about this either way.

Exactly, it's looking like the Federal case will go the same route as the state one.

Which is excellent.

Based on these livetweets from a Houston Chronicle reporter on the Texas Republicans trying to get votes thrown out through a federal judge: I would expect drive-thru voting to be ended, but no votes being thrown out.

[up] Would that affect Election Day voting in Texas?

[up][up]I would count that as a victory, making voting harder isn't the best but preserving the existing votes is of paramount importance.

Judge rules Republicans lack standing.

Of GOP argument that drive-thru sites are less secure than in-person polling sites, Hanen says “I ain’t buying that.”

Wonder how long before Trump calls them traitors.

Actually, I can see this being a sign of things to come. Trump will tell people to fix the election, but they won't, which will lead to Trump getting angry at them. I'd love for something like this to drive a wedge between Trump and the Republican party as a whole.

CNN article on the ruling: https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/02/politics/texas-houston-republican-drive-thru-ballot/index.html

My brain is still trying to process the words “Democratic-leaning Houston”. I’d heard Austin was comparatively progressive, but Houston? I thought Houston was Oilville.

From I've been hearing, apparently Judge Hanen likes having his job more than cheating to win.

Basically, he probably wants to go play some golf this week and not have that activity interrupted.

Barr and this guy are both people I wouldn't have dinner with but both of them seem to have realized that absolute loyalty to Trump is not going to end well for them. Too bad Barr already did horrifying crimes for him.

Remind me, when do the first election results get announced? I am trying to find out how late I need to go to bed in Switzerland to know the outcome of the election.
