The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I am more explaining why it is actualy a very bad idea and we need to look elsewhere if we actualy want to encourage people to engage with democracy.

All valid points - I was just pointing out what I thought was the irony of the current situation.

(It's also probably an incorrect use of the word Irony, but take that up with Alanis Morissette)

Republicans do not suppress votes because it benefits them, they suppress votes because they are a right-wing party and right-wing parties suppress the vote.

At least according to a study that I read sometime ago about why right wing parties change election laws. It found that if you assume that they do it out of self-interest, you get a lot of places where they lost votes because of the changes. If you assume they do it out of ideology, everything fits much better. In the USA (theoretically) voter suppression favours them but that does not change the fact that, when considering many countries rather than just the USA in too many cases it doesn't.

Welp, my ballot finally arrived by mail to the Registrar. So civic duty done.

[up]A lot of things make sense once you recognize that a lot of right-wing parties just don't think that everyone should have the right to vote.

In my country, every single citizen who's at least 18 years old has the right to vote. Everyone. I just wonder how the extremely mentally disabled are meant to go vote. It seems as if they've been shadow-disenfranchised.

AP News: Trump threatens to fire Fauci in rift with disease expert

President Donald Trump is suggesting that he will fire Dr. Anthony Fauci after Tuesday's election, as his rift with the nation's top infectious disease expert widens while the nation sees its most alarming outbreak of the coronavirus since the spring.

Texas Tribune: Texas Supreme Court rejects Republican-led effort to throw out nearly 127,000 Harris County votes

The all-Republican court denied the request by conservative Republican activists (including one state legislator) to throw out drive-thru ballots from Harris County. This would invalidate over 10% of in-person early ballots cast in this largely blue county.

While the Texas Supreme Court rejected the measure, a similar lawsuit is pending in federal court, with a hearing set for Monday morning in a Houston-based district court.

Or they think that some people's votes should matter more than others, but since they can't apply a 3/5ths compromise to non-white-male votes, they have to round down to 0 vote for the "lesser" demographics. The Republican challenger for MA Senator Markey's seat even says in his ads that convicted felons don't deserve the same vote as law-abiding citizens, for a demographic they can openly talk about disenfranchising.

They want the 0, not the 3/5 compromise. Weird as it is, the 3/5 compromise was actually meant to disempower slave owners.

One key function of the Electoral College was that slaves don't get votes but are counted as population for the purpose of determining a state's number of electors. Effectively, slave owners voted on behalf of their victims.

Counting slaves as only 3/5 of a person was a means of reducing a slave owner's ill-begotten electoral power and keeping slave states from entirely overrunning the union.

AP News: Trump threatens to fire Fauci in rift with disease expert
I feel like this was going to be inevitable no matter the election's outcome but, why say it now?

I figured he was keeping Fauci around just because firing him would make the Trump campaign a bigger flaming dumpster fire than it already is, so to admit it's going to happen the day before election day is... baffling. And scary, too, but mainly baffling.

Even with early voting, having just one major day to vote seems very impractical to me.

Speaking of the Election tomorrow; who should I write instead of voting for Mo Brooks here in Northern Alabama? I'm thinking of just writing in Peter Joffreon (the guy who ran against him, and lost, in 2018), but Idk.

America is usually pretty safe during elections. This one is completely unknown territory though. It's the first time to my knowledge that a candidate more or less subtly encourages his partisans to be so violent. Plus with the police blatantly taking their side, who knows what is actually going to happen on election day.

Is Brooks completely unopposed? Not even a third-party candidate?

The guy who ran against him in 2018 seems a solid one, you could even just put "generic Democrat", "Anybody else" or "None of the above".

@Nes Classic: Fauci gave an interview over the weekend that was more clearly critical than his usual style. And Trump has poor impulse control.
