Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'm starting to get pretty anxious about the 3rd. Trump the man means nothing to me, but the people he has inspired and what they might do in the very near future scares the hell out of me. There needs to be a law that if a sitting President has done nothing but praise and endorse local terrorist groups, he should be removed immediately.

Just Having FunI will say the election is giving me serious Hope Is Scary vibes (especially because I think it's likely Biden will win).
You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midNY Times: Trump’s supporters block traffic on major roadways in New York and New Jersey.
Videos taken by motorists showed the president’s backers parked in the middle of the westbound lanes of the bridge, which carries Interstate 287 across the Hudson River and is named for the father of the current governor, Andrew M. Cuomo.
A number of them exited their vehicles in the rain and waved Trump banners and American flags as motorists honked their horns.
BUT WAIT, THERES MORE:
While the above was happening, NYPD felt it would be a more worthy use of their time and resources to arrest people at an anti-trump protest, including journalists.
The NYPD later claimed on Twitter that the reports of journalist arrests were false, as the pair of reporters apparently lacked official, NYPD-issued police credentials.
Bold part mine.
And little kid me thought the "surrender and die" joke in Jak II was just a joke.

PSN ID: FateSeraph | Switch friendcode: SW-0145-8835-0610 Congratulations! She/TheyOn that note, yesterday I heard someone say that Trump was likely to win because the high turnout is among white-working class men, i.e. Trump's base.
Even if it is true, I can only assumed based around everything else it's being outweighed by even higher turnout from Democrats (or at least anti-Trump people) but I'm curious if anyone knows if it's actually true.
I remember reading once that increased turnouts usually don't favor the incumbent. But that as a long time ago so not sure if that still holds true.
I think it was said earlier that black and latino voters don't fully trust early/mail-in voting and are planning to vote day-of so it could just be that.

The polls and endless news from the elections pretty much all indicate that Biden is getting powerful support, so I see no reason to think that this high turnout is indicating something else than what seems to be the logical thing.
Plus Trump is in complete panic over things, so I can't believe that the president wouldn't know how good or bad things are going for him.
Dave Wasserman of the Cook Political Report said as much.
Plus, he says this election was not really about Biden winning through a huge surge of Po C voters but more just winning enough whites to beat trump. Which we have strong evidence that he has, especially suburban women who voted for the democrats in the midterms and who have no reason to sit this election out. Biden polling well with seniors is also really bad for him.
Of note, there's an organization called "Souls to the Polls" run by black churches that's been operating for a while and makes election day this big tradition. They have actually been trying to get people to early vote, and obviously that doesn't account for all black voters but it does give some insight into the voting culture that's apparently prevalent in a lot of black communities since a lot of the older black voters don't feel as safe about having their vote count if they aren't doing it in person on election day.

The Trumpsters blocking highways was a somewhat coordinated thing as I've heard of them in multiple states.
I also heard of one in western Washington, but I don't have a source that isn't another forum.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."While this is technically true, the way people frame it greatly exaggerates the small statistical trend. It's like a 10% difference at most, less IIRC. Which is statistically significant and we can ask questions about it, but it's not like "black voters hate early voting!"

It sounds like minority voters, who already fear having their votes thrown out/stopped altogether for a host of reasons, heard all the noise about tossing out/not counting mail in/early votes, decided to risk Election Day.
It makes sense, given the context, that this fear would cause a significant if not huge shift in voting habits.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.

I wonder if Trump even has the money to hire lawyers to contest swing state results.
