Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Interesting news out of Arizona, from the AZ Central
: Arizona power must come from 100% carbon-free sources by 2050, regulators decide
The new requirements will spur development of solar plants, battery storage and other renewables, though commissioners debated whether the rules will affect customers' bills. Because the rules require additional energy-efficiency measures, they are likely to include opportunities for customers to save through utility conservation programs.
Arizona Corporation Commissioners approved the measure, which increases the requirements for the first time in 14 years, on a 3-2 vote. Voting in favor of the new rules were Republican Chairman Robert Burns, Democrat Sandra Kennedy, and Republican Boyd Dunn. Opposed were Republicans Justin Olson and Lea Marquez Peterson.

Florida will also be watched because it is likely to be able to announce results early.
In something more personal, my mom is panicking at the prospect of riots on Tuesday/Wednesday. She made my dad go out and buy like $900 worth of supplies last week. She also tried to buy 3 12-packs of toilet paper from Costco but the cashier made her put two of them back.

The damned queen and the relentless knight. My mother claims she "stocks up" on toilet paper because she knows everybody else is gonna hoard it, so she gets all she can before the stores run out.

i'm tired, my friendToilet paper won't protect anyone against riots.
What are they going to do?
Do a "Trump" and throw the rolls at the rioters to fend them off?
(And we all know that if any kind of riots do occur, it will be done by the MAGA-cultists. Normal people are fully capable of carrying out peaceful protests and wear masks at the same time.)
...
That said, I'm not doing a repeat of 2016 and will just do my best in trying to explain to any potential MAGA encounter that "NO, Trump has not won already. Wait for the votes to be counted first!"
It's the storm rush as I call it, as you'll usually see a major rush in grocery if you know a predicted storm is coming. Especially big storms (like hurricanes), but there is usually an uptick in sales right before a major change in weather.
This is coming from someone who has worked in grocery for years.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Only experienced that once and that was when the Covid pandemic started (Toilet paper, flour, bread and yeast. All gone in the span of a single day.)
No clue how that would help in the case of a riot though, since neither a virus or a storm got the brains to just go into someone's house and steal what they can't find in the stores.
(Also, it is more likely that any MAGA riot would just settle for random acts of destruction instead. That and harassing people who didn't vote for "their guy".)
It's two days before the elections, and so far Joe Biden is still leading by 272 seats compared to Trump's 125. 141 seats are tossed up, though.

The electoral college would probably influence the outcome of the race, but I might be wrong.
Crazy stupid in battle. Crazy cupid on a nice date.I always stock up on toilet paper. As in, regardless of whether there's any real reason to. Then, when something like COVID-19 hits, I don't need to hoard, because I was sensible, like a Biblical virgin who brought enough oil for her lamp.
And when it comes to hoarding in situations like these, well... After hoarding becomes widespread, it becomes irrational not to. Obviously it'd be better if nobody started hoarding in the first place, but it's a bit funny how some people said "Stop hoarding! There is no shortage, so you don't need to hoard! And now there's no paper for the rest of us!" If there's no paper for the rest of you, that's what I call a shortage.

BBC has a report on which countries want to see the Republicans win.
It's no coincidence. Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan are aggressively against China aka the 'big bad'. They know with Trump on their side, surely China can now kowtow to them.
They're not sure what will come out between the China-US relations had Biden won the elections, even if he dismissed Jiping as a 'thug'.
And since we're talking about the countries that want their particular candidate to win, my country here backs Biden for president: [1]
. For a bonus, South Africa and Mexico tied third place of countries favours Biden instead of Trump, with South Korea and Mexico being the major ones.
