Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

> And who among us are liars who say they're going to bed early but will actually be glued to their screens all night?
raises hand,I can't help it,but I have to know the final result because a lot hinges on this election, not knowing would leave me anxiously trying to predict the result
Its one of those times where I wish I didn't have to sleep
have a listen and have a link to my discord serverIf we're gonna talk about personal anecdotes, for me: in 2016 the polls were wrong and I wasn't happy, but then in 2019 the polls were right and I wasn't happy. So if Trump wins this election, then the conclusion I'll take away from it is 'elections always end badly'. :V

Those sell-by-dates won't stop me because I can't read!A reminder that Clinton got more votes than any white man ever, only Obama ever got more. With early-voter rolls already surpassing 2016's total in some areas, it's very possible that Biden is going to get more votes than any presidential candidate ever, even if Trump manages to cheat his way to an electoral college victory again.
Really, these discussions really make me wish that people could understand that "I have a feeling" is not a valid argument, and I mean that going both ways.
If you're feeling bad or nervous about things I don't want to belittle your concerns, and if you're feeling optimistic I'm glad for your mental health, but people really should learn that personal anecdotes and the like actually mean very little, and in the face of people consistently explaining to you why things are different (or why they're not a sure thing) just going "But 2016/I have a bad feeling" is not a productive argument, and a bit of a waste of time in actual discussion.
God, I couldn't agree more.
To be fair to optimists though still irrational at least their position is backed up by the data this time.

When I said optimist I mean the rare comment (not here, but other places) about how "Biden is a lock in Arizona", no, Biden is favored but there's still a decent chance Trump would win it (without it being the end of the world).
But on the flip side you have the constant insistence of "the GOP will force things to court, no matter what, and the Supreme Court will definitely hand the presidency to Trump." Claims like that abound and there's really no discussion to be had about them, because the people making the claim are incapable/aren't interesting in actually evaluating the likelihood of things. They've already made up their minds.

I'm going to be glued to the live feed of MSNBC and very carefully monitoring this thread for who needs to be thumped and/or whether it needs to be temporarily locked. Hint, hint. But I will be going to bed on time unless the data indicate a wildly unexpected result.
Remember, no matter what any Republican says, including Trump, the election will not be decided Tuesday night unless it's a blowout for Biden.

Ah, gotcha.
Nevermind then, yeah that sounds annoying too.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangI’ll be doing an all-night four screen watch, the TV will have a news channel on it, my laptop will probably have 538 on it, my PC will have a live results site on it and I’ll use my iPad to be on here. I’ve got both the 3rd and 4th of work and I don’t have to do anything on the 5th even though I’m technically working (the wonders of work from home when you can’t work from home).
Best guess is I’ll spend a lot of the night on here telling people to calm down, I’m gonna try and put together a results watch thread for us to use that will have links to mental health services so people can get help when they inevitably start panicking over an interpretation of incomplete results.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI'll probably do the same thing I've been doing around here, and that's not post round here very much.
I'm feeling a little worried about the possibility that the far-right are gonna get more violent, even if Biden wins. My mom is confident there are more of us than there are of them, but... I'm not sure. What are you guys' thoughts?

I’ll try not to look at anything reporting status at all all that day, but I know I won’t be able to stop hopping into this thread, and I’m sure someone here will make sure I don’t miss out.
