Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Honestly, Stephen Miller is the single worst aspect of the Trump administration, bar none. He's the "idea man" for all of Trump's worst policies, which Trump only ever has a vague plan for - Miller is the one who fills in the details.
Also, another thing to consider for the election - the stock market has dropped just before election day
, which traditionally just means "uncertainty", but given how much Trump has played up how much of an impact he's had on the economy, that may very well lose him some key voters.
Yeah, I'm reminded of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal's "Economic Whipping Boy
", who served as The Scapegoat for any time the economy doesn't make sense, so that the President could instead focus on areas the Presidency can actually influence.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"-Knocks on every single Redwood tree in California-
You know, Trump's money problem and Biden's lack thereof make me think of something. If Biden had been raking in a lot of money in the primaries, then he probably would have spent much of it boosting his campaign in the primaries and had much less going into the general election. The fact that so much money came after the convention really helped focus where it would be spent.
In contrast Trump was taking in reelection money the day he was sworn in. And blew through most of it on things and at times when it really didn't make a difference.
We have possible red flags again. Security info request from Trump campaign perturbs Cumberland County officials ahead of election
County officials said they have not responded to the request and do not intend to, according to the county commissioners.
I'm happy they don't plan on dealing with this request, but this might be getting sent to numerous other counties, some of whom may be willing to accept the request.

"In a move surprising absolutely no one"The stock market operates on the same principles as religion does.
It's powered by pure "belief" and "illusion" than anything else.
And once more, a thing that the MAGA cultists gets wrong, it's not the actual economy (which crashed five months before the pandemic started, thanks to Trump's actions, of course...).
Just "wishes and dreams" on a electric board.
That's only partially true and it's a reduction to absurdity that doesn't hold up to any kind of detailed scrutiny.
The stock market is a means of allocating capital to invest on scales not available to the individual or even the individual business. There is enormous effort put into calculating the market value of businesses and thus the target stock prices. A vast amount of information flows into the system on allocation of resources, supply and demand, corporate performance past and present, market trends, political trends, and so on.
Then it gets in the hands of panicky, trend-chasing money managers who are all seeking to get rich on the backs of investors while contributing no value to society.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"With the ballot security information, I'll admit that I'd be extremely tempted to coordinate with police to give deliberately false information and see if someone showed up hoping to tamper with them.
Edit: Oh fuck me, this is actually worse than it first looked - the person who emailed is a volunteer with the Trump campaign, not an actual employee, so this is just "Poll Watchers needed!" taken to its logical conclusion. And then it veers back because apparently this is at the request of the official campaign using her as an intermediary.
The email contained an attached, bullet-pointed list of the details requested, which O’Shaughnessy described as being pursuant to “your office’s compliance with existing statutes and law.”
“Please respond to these questions no later than 5:00 pm EST, tomorrow, Wednesday, October 28, 2020,” the email stated, asking for the response to be sent to a Gmail account bearing O’Shaughnessy’s name, and also including a phone number.
That number is tied to an Orlando-area virtual learning center, as well as a personal Facebook page for O’Shaughnessy where she identifies herself in a publicly visible post as having “served as an appointee in the Trump Administration in Washington DC.”
A person who identified themselves as “Leslie” answered the phone number but declined to discuss their role in the email with The Sentinel.
The Trump campaign’s communications office confirmed to The Sentinel that O’Shaughnessy is a volunteer with the campaign, and offered an explanatory statement from Deputy National Press Secretary Thea Mc Donald.
“As part of the Trump campaign’s efforts to ensure a free and fair election, we have asked county clerks for information so that we can gain a detailed understanding of voting processes — and the similarities and differences that may exist in different jurisdictions,” Mc Donald wrote.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Hi, hi, first-time poster. Noticed that no-one has mentioned the - the name this particular belief was known by has to change now because the team involved abandoned their name, the NFL team from Washington DC winning the last home game before the election (which they did, against Dallas) is a harbinger of the incumbent President staying in office. I'm coming in a bit late, but football doesn't mean much to me, so I had to remember to check the season report.
Even the Soviets were consumerist.I heard that when a left-handed dog farts under the full moon, the incumbent President is eaten by a pack of rabid hyenas. Don't feed the memes. Then look up confirmation bias

> On-topic, I honestly do believe that come Saturday next week, we'll be seeing a landslide for Biden, smiling and thinking "And to think we were so worried..."
