The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It's one of those things where it would only be a remotely coherent idea if everyone else did it or you're rarely relevant as a weight in the election.

[up] What, they don't push for it in California and NY?

As I recall, they pushed for it in swing states that could go either way like Pennsylvania, so that even if they lose the popular vote of the state they could get something for the Republican running, while avoiding it in states that are already solidly Republican.

If I had to guess, there's no point in trying in solidly Democratic states like California or New York.

They pretty much never have had the chance to in their respective state legislatures. Republicans have only held both the House and Senate of California at the same time for two years out of the past sixty; the New York State Assembly has been in Democratic hands since the 1970's and pretty much the only reason Republicans ever had the chance to control the New York State Senate in recent years is when some Democrats decide to vote with them for whatever reason.

Also, Nebraska and Maine have few electoral votes in the College — them doing weird stuff wasn't really that much of a concern at the time.

EDIT: As of now 538 has Biden is 90% chance to win. Time for Sportsball!

  • For an American football frame of reference, the Red team has the ball at their own 20 yard line with 2:00 left in the game and they're down by 7.
  • For a baseball frame of reference, it's the bottom of the 8th inning with the Red team batting, down by 2 runs, 1 out and bases empty.
  • Basketball (NBA rules): Red team is down by 4 with the ball and 80 seconds left.

[up][up]Umm I doubt that, there are several districts in California like 4th, 8th, 22nd, and 23rd districts are extremely red. (I live in 23rd sadly... and...)

If they got that past it would be at least 4 solid electoral votes.

I wasn't talking about there not being red congressional districts, I was talking about the legislators not being red enough to pass something like that.

Maybe they are, I don't know, it was just a theory.

It's more there's no point in even trying in states as blue as California or New York, because there's no reasonable chance of such a proposal passing and doing so marks the assemblyman proposing it as a troublemaker and damaging to their own prospects.

Biden contributed an op-ed to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, saying that "stand with South Korea, strengthening our alliance to safeguard peace in East Asia and beyond, rather than extorting Seoul with reckless threats to remove our troops." and that he will " engage in principled diplomacy and keep pressing toward a denuclearized North Korea and a unified Korean Peninsula, while working to reunite Korean Americans separated from loved ones in North Korea for decades.".

I don't know what the process of reuniting people outside of North Korea with the loved ones that are still there, but it sounds difficult.

[up] Asia has always been a...perilous tightrope for diplomacy. The Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese hate each other's guts. You can't help one without the other two jumping on your neck. The only place they all seem to be cool with that's nearby is the Philippines.

The Philipines has their own issues, right now they have a very Trump like dictator that is having political activists, critics, and any journalists that are trying to document things killed on the streets.

I know they are having protests right now over a anti-free speech bill.

The point is that East Asia for the most part doesn't have a problem with the Philippines. Probably because the Philippines usually plays ball with them.

It also doesn't overtly favor any one East Asian country.

I've been reading up on the PH's situation.

The people there love the US, but Duterte wants to align more with China.

Based on that sentence, the US would put a sanction on the Philippines for siding with their enemies. I imagine doing the same for any country that shows signs of kowtowing to China. Whatever happens in the elections would prove riskier because of the rift it creates between the government and its people.

Just one more reason why Biden needs to win: Trump adviser Stephen Miller reveals aggressive second-term immigration agenda

You thought the stuff they pulled in the first term was bad? That's just a warm-up.

Judge: Trump Admin‘s TikTok ban would cause "irreparable harm" to creators: The administration's TikTok and WeChat bans have not fared well in court so far.

Basically, the judge added this to the list of Things A President Cannot Do.

I'd say that arbitrary suppression of speech for political purposes lost the day, which is a net good even if the target is TikTok.

Just waiting for the day Stephen Miller gets arrested and put into trial for "Crimes against Humanity" by the highest of courts.

Seriously, he is not president or anyone of importance. He should be arrested like anyone else.

If Miller gets arrested for anything, it'll more likely be whatever white collar crimes he's involved with.

And I have little doubt he's involved with at least one white-collar crime.

Yesterday, I informed my brother that West Virginia is a state of its own. "What!?" he said. "But there's no East Virginia!"

I do wonder if people in the lesser-known states are jealous of the more famous ones. For instance, everybody in my country knows about California. West Virginia, though, is much less famous. Kansas is famous as the place where Dorothy and Toto aren't anymore. People generally know that Illinois exists, but not much more.

On-topic, I honestly do believe that come Saturday next week, we'll be seeing a landslide for Biden, smiling and thinking "And to think we were so worried..."
