The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah. I'm optimistic but people, taken as a whole, are morons. Things are looking better then 2016 but I can't deny some trepidation that things could yet go south.

That said, I don't like it especially likely, but the thought is there.

At the sametime I think people shouldn't overestimate number of stupid people in America. So far in elections in South Korea and NZ people voted for current government who handled covid VERY well. I have a theory that says covid will play very important role in this election and since Trump FAILED to ride it, he will pay the consequences.

Just being hopeful. I really do hope Biden wins this.

It does need to be kept in mind that conscious malice plays a role in Trump's support. That people are suffering and dying under Trump's leadership is not a flaw to a voter that wants certain groups of people to suffer and die.

Don't forget that revealing quote from the Trump regretter that went memetic in 2017: "He's hurting the wrong people."

Then it might make a difference that the worst spreading at the moment, as far as I've been able to get, is in the Midwest. Not coastal cities and blue states.

And another thing... Trump needs to go for the sake of Republicans as well. Look Republicans are using Trump like a drug... like a steroids. They think instead of making a real muscle using a Trump will make them win. I do hope losing this election would send enough of a shock to reform the party. That Trump method isn't a win-all cheat.

In Terry Pratchett's Discworld, they had an aging Conan the Barbarian character analog that had extreme problems interpreting pledges as empty bravado — as a man of his word, he naturally assumes that anyone else saying something like 'I would rather die than betray the Emperor' fully means it. This led to the deaths of several guards and courtiers in the Agatean Empire before everyone wised up.

What does this have to do with Trump?

Many Trump voters are wising up to the reality that, yes, he expects them to die for them.

If a Blue Deluge happens, it won't be because of racism or people realizing that's wrong, BLM protest success or not, it will be because of Covid-19.

there are very much ways he could challenge the results in court

The chances of a successful court challenge to the election are very slim. There are a few cases that could have long-term election effects, but the 2020 election isn’t going to be stolen in court. Continuing voter suppression is more concerning.

They should have sent a poet.

Then it might make a difference that the worst spreading at the moment, as far as I've been able to get, is in the Midwest. Not coastal cities and blue states.

It will make a difference to the people who care. And the people who care were already going to vote Biden.

That's the thing about Trump, and his approval numbers show it remains true even now. There is literally nothing that could ever convince his base to abandon him, and there is literally nothing that could ever convince anyone else to support him. Nobody stops supporting Trump, nobody starts supporting Trump. His approval ratings have been impossibly stable for his entire Presidency, minus that rough first year in 2017.

The deciding factor of this election will be whether more of us vote and have our votes counted than them.

I've heard MAGA cultists state that they would rather abandon the United States entirely and move to Costa Rica or someplace similar because they refuse to live "under socialist rule" in any form or with Biden as president.

(Yes, it is the dumbest thing I've heard but hey, they stopped thinking critically the moment they let Trump "think for them" instead.)

Their hatred and delusion in regards to the Democratic party might force them to leave and become "immigrants living on welfare" in other countries instead.

(Oh, the irony is so amazing that I actually hope they leave in their childish temper-tantrums... and discover how harsh reality really is for once.)

Ehhh, Tobias Drake, that isn't quite true. As has been noted in this thread, spikes in COVID-19 cases are typically followed by a decline of Trump's per state/county approval.

Hawaii and Texas have both surpassed 2016 voter turnout numbers. Both are historically low-turnout states, so it's good that people are voting.

And to be clear, that's not surpassing their 2016 early voting, that's surpassing their entire number of votes from 2016.

[up][up] so any chance Texas going Blue? I heard it has 1/3 of a chance of going Blue.

[up] It's definitely possible. Trump is still favored, but Biden has, as you said, a 1/3 chance of winning the state, which is pretty decent. Democrats have been working hard at turning out voters, and the Texas suburbs are trending more blue. I don't know if this is the year it happens, but keeping my fingers crossed.

[down][down] IMHO, Texas should be filed under don't expect it to happen, but don't be surprised if it does, either.

Bloomberg has some very interesting data on the population of each state, showing the population of noneligible voters (<18 and noncitizens) and disenfranchised citizens, as well as current early vote turnout and 2016 turnout. Wish it was a tad bit more interactive and had better labeling of numbers (the 2020 turnout numbers are a few days out-of-date as well), but very cool all the same.
