Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It’s a good thing the GOP is so Stupid Evil. They could easily have just pretended to go along with Biden’s approach and then backstabbed him after the election, but now more people than ever know just how heinous they are.
My musician pageso Americans... any chance Trump might still become president DESPITE the fact that he lost the election? There is theory going on that says that Trump might throw tantrum and accuse this election of being a fraud ( because of mail-in votes and yadayadayada ) He might bring Biden and Democrats to the supreme court and since right now supreme judge favours Trump they might say this election is invalid and hand over to congress... and since Republicans dominate Senate Congress might declare Trump a winner.
U.S. appeals court upends Minnesota plan to extend deadline for receiving ballots
and 400,000 ballots haven’t arrived yet.
My mind jumps to the postal service dragging their feet... 400,000 ballots... like starting to think this is exactly how Trump wins.

There are way too many failsafes for Trump to remain in office without winning an election.

Unless the GOP wants to face complete and utter destruction at the hands of the people for trying to turn the United States into a banana republic by this blatant trashing of the Constitution and everything America is supposed to stand for, they won't back him on this.
Especially if the votes cast for Biden ends up in numbers that simply can't be disputed or needed to be settled in court.

While, to be fair, Trump did win an election he also lost, that's far less likely this time. The only way the Supreme Court and/or Congress can do any of what you suggest is if a result is very close. Polls so far give Biden a sizable lead. Some individual state results might be close, but the overall result should favor Biden by a wide margin.
No. The electoral college is what decides who's president. Biden wins it be big enough, it won't matter what anyone else does.

It’s nothing quite so melodramatic. An attempt by Trump to stay in office would never even make it to the “people rise up” point, there are numerous failsafes and alternatives, as well as significant practical issues.
They should have sent a poet.I know I keep saying this, but "no way" is wildly overstating it. Trump can't just declare "Nuh uh, I won" and flat-out refuse to leave the White House in January 2021. (Well, he could, but it would just lead to the most ignominious ending to his presidency possible with him being forcibly evicted). But - particularly with the total moral bankruptcy of Republicans as his allies - there are very much ways he could challenge the results in court. They'd probably only work if the election is close, but it's not like a Biden landslide is a safe bet: Trump still can win legitimately, after all.
Mind you, I don't want to overstate that possibility either: he'd have to win every swing state where Biden is not up by more than five points in the polls, so it's a difficult path that essentially requires a repeat of 2016's polling errors.
Republicans do that every election. Voter suppression is a key element in keeping them competitive despite a minority of support. If the GOP wasn't out there suppressing urban votes in every state they can, then Democrats would wield a lot more power than we do now.
Republican ideology appeals mostly to a shrinking demographic of old middle and upper class white men. They can't win elections on vote count alone, so they have to make those people's votes count more than everyone else's - both by way of preventing other people from voting and by the sheer fact that a single vote in Wyoming is worth more votes than a single vote in New York.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

The Bush years and his reporting over the NSA Prism scandal left Greenwald with a burning hatred and distrust of all US institutions, media outlets, NATO and centrist Democrats, and to this day still regards them as his true enemies while downplaying or blatantly ignoring Trump and what Republicans do. I even suspect he's secretly supportive of Trump's dismantling of US government institutions because of his hatred of them. He also gets really angry at any suggestion of interference in the US by his real favorite country, Russia.
Now we find out that he's indeed willing to stoop as low as agreeing with far right conspiracy theories as long as they target Democrats. Maybe with his departure The Intercept will actually be a credible outlet now.
