The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The FBI actually got back to me about that "anonymous" tip I made a week ago. I had to explain to them that the whole thing was a nothing burger. Freaky stuff. But hey, it turns out the FBI actually looks at these things. How amazing.

Notice how he talked so much about the wall last election, but now there's not a peep? I'm not sure what the status is there, but I'm fairly sure he'd be bragging about it like a madman if it'd perfectly accomplished what it was supposed to.

It became increasingly obvious that the wall was never gonna happen so the admin quietly stopped pushing it.

Whenever the subject of the wall comes up, Trump likes to claim it's already there and stopping migrants from entering the US.

Senator Purdue of Georgia has withdrawn from the last debate with his opponent Ossoff. Presumably because he got his ass kicked last night.

Stuff like this really upsets me. Not only does my little brother, formerly of the manosphere and later a follower of Alex Jones, believe in Qanon, but now it's spreading amongst teenagers, who are bringing it to school with them and arguing with teachers. Facts don't matter, everything they don't want to believe is biased.

It's scary. I understand that in trying times, people turn towards conspiracy theories for explanations, but this is super disturbing. It's spreading rapidly.

Yeah I saw some clips of the debate, ossof called perdue a crook straight to his face and called him out for his antisemitic attack ads, it was brutal.

The problem is that kids dont get this stuff in a vacuum—they get it from their parents, who are telling them a narrative at home and the kids are bringing it to school. You can't fight the belief system of the parents, the school may not even have a legal right to, depending on local laws. The best you can do in cases like these is teach critical thinking in some neutral context, but with clear social implications, like the clorination of water. That's a good one, because no one disputes it anymore, making it a "safe" political controversy, but back in the day people on both sides were passionately opposed to each other. Assign teams of students to take each side, make presentations, and then discuss what answer turned out to be correct, and how people get confused. Then you let them pick their own topic in the news, and make them follow the same steps.

[up]x5 I don't understand how people can believe this stuff. And these people who keep spreading these stuff are desperate to get Trump re-elected.

[up][up][up]It's possible the debate had an effect I suppose but I have not been following that election very closely, so I can't say.

Anyway, you know how the right gets mad whenever people don't want to give them a platform and call censorship? According to senator Mike Lee, even basic fact-checking is now a form of censorship.

To give a bit more context, he's referring to how twitter and other companies have started labeling certain content posted by conservatives as unsubstantiated and false and complaining about how this doesn't happen to leftist politicians.

Ignoring of course how one party is continuously pushing conspiracy theories, downplaying the threat of the pandemic, and just like, lying continuously. If you yell fire in a theater without good cause, you don't get away scott-free.

People believe it because they have a strong need for the world to be simple to understand. I actually believe that there is a neurological component to it—that some people simply aren't well equipped to comprehend complex social relationships. Conspiracy theory is a breath of fresh air to them.

@Charles Phipps I'd say it also helps that these people tend to think in terms of a certain ad hominen fallacy where you dismiss views based on it being in the speaker's interests for you to believe it. Best summed up as "That's what they want you to think!"

By showing that someone else is making cash off of their conspiracy theories, it essentially might weaponize their innate paranoia and logical fallacy against the conspiracy theory itself, as now the conspiracy can be painted as propaganda some fat cat wants you to believe for their personal gain.

Heat at Trump rally sends a dozen attendees to the hospital

A crowded Trump rally in steamy Tampa, Florida, on Thursday resulted in 17 attendees needing medical attention, with a dozen being taken to the hospital, fire officials told NBC News.

Trump spoke for just under an hour in 87-degree heat at the event outside of Raymond James Stadium to a largely mask-less group of supporters.

A fire truck at the rear of the rally sprayed water in the air to rain down on some rallygoers, but the heat was too much for some attendees, many of whom had been waiting for hours. Tampa Fire Rescue said one of the attendees fainted and another had a seizure. The other 10 who were taken to the hospital were just listed as "sick" with no other details.

The incident came two days after 30 rallygoers in Omaha, Nebraska, needed medical attention after transportation issues resulted in hundreds of attendees being stuck for hours in the freezing cold. Officials said seven were taken to area hospitals with a variety of ailments.

Trump rival Joe Biden held a drive-in rally with close to 300 cars in Tampa later in the day, and wrapped up his speech early after it started to rain.

"I'm going to shorten this for you all," Biden told the crowd. "Get out of the rain!"

Sounds like someone is overcompensating.

He gets flak for leaving them out in the cold, goes somewhere warmer, and ends up giving people heatstroke.

I'm agnostic but the part of me that does believe in a higher power is like "I don't think the almighty would leave them to die by bear attack ,I mean he's already left them out in the cold, then made them near sweat to death, logically the next step is to leave them completely isolated and abandoned" and the non believing is like "God no,please leave the bears out of this"
