Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

There was a poll the other day that asked people where they get the majority of their news. 62% of Trump voters got their news from Fox. Of that 62% the Hunter Biden story, along with riots in cities and the Democrats being radical antifa leftists, was one of the most dominant reasons they gave for supporting Trump.
Incidentally, this same group heard far less about Trump's China bank account, Trump encouraging his supporters to yell "lock her up!" at Gretchen Whitmore, or Trump badmouthing his own Covid team than even the non-Fox Republicans.
Yeah, but Trump can't win on Fox Republicans alone. That's the hope. It's not about whether they care about the Hunter Biden thing; it's whether everyone else cares.
As for the website defacement, it's clearly a prank, not a serious conspiracy theory.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The poll also points out that the bothsidesism of Democrats and Republicans living in their own media bubbles isn't true. Democrats get their news from a far greater variety of sources and will hear good and bad stories about Trump and Biden by a much higher percentage.
Fox viewers on the other hand, regardless of whether its the late night white nationalists or the daytime news anchors, get media that suppresses stories that make Trump look bad while constantly promoting stories to smear Biden.

I don't really think most people care about the Hunter Biden story. Compared to the emails thing Hillary had it's completely insignificant and isn't gaining any traction. The main preoccupation people have right now is the pandemic above all else, which is quite bad for trump.

Q basically started as a prank too, by the looks of it, and look where we are now. Pranks are dangerous in these times of misinformation and conspiracy mongering.
As for the news, I can't wait to going back to the presidency being too boring to make the news most days. It will probably mean some adjusting for comedians. Colbert recently gave an example of the sort of crazy story he'd be covering if not for Trump.
What sort of things did you guys usually discuss on here before Trump?
The Hunter Biden story is not a good look, and we certainly should be at least a little critical of Biden for his role (or lack of one) in it, but I agree that it is not really relevant at the moment.

That's the point. Trump wants COVID-19 to go away because it's killing him with the part of the public not glued to Fox News. He keeps offering up these distractions in the hope that they'll work, like shiny objects in front of a crying baby, but they don't, because the baby is running a fever, shitting itself, and starving to death.
Mostly whatever the latest news was, with an occasional digression into political theory or history.
The Hunter Biden thing is a nothingburger: a made-up scandal. Much like Hillary's emails or Benghazi, it's a Chewbacca Defense meant to take something honestly minor and spin it into a scandal to discredit Democrats as the party of integrity in government. It's a shit-smeared monkey throwing shit so that everyone else is as smelly as it is.

From what I've heard, Trump is actually pretty bad for comedians and satirists because he's a bit too ridiculous as-is. The Onion, for example, ran something saying they'd stop making fun of Trump as much because a lot of their joke articles actually wound up becoming literally true. They need someone who's evil but not cartoonish.
With news, however, I'd imagine Trump brought them a lot of business. He creates a lot of 'newsworthy' events. Indeed, I've heard it proposed once here that part of Trump's support comes simply from the fact that him causing mayhem is, from a certain point of view, entertaining.

Does it sort trends by your location, perhaps?
It is entertaining, in a way. It is like watching a high drama reality show. Only it is reality, which makes it a lot less entertaining.
It is, in a way, a demonstration of why "reality" TV only works as a fictional medium. Shows like Big Brother are only fun if there is a layer of fictionality involved, if the audience is on some level aware that this is not really happening. But when you take that layer away, you're just watching a bunch of assholes abuse and manipulate each other, which is a lot less fun to watch.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesTwitter trends are heavily swayed by spamming, bots, and not all the tweets are supportive anyway.
And only a fraction of US voters use Twitter regularly, and most of the activity (political and otherwise) is generated by a small fraction of accounts.
Twitter is not a good measure of the public perception. On anything.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.FBI arrests white supremacy leader in extremism crackdown in Michigan – The arrests come three weeks after prosecutors said the FBI thwarted a plot to violently overthrow the government and kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer
It's great to see the FBI actually targeted white supremacist groups instead of going after "Black Identity Extremists".

Honestly, that was my first thought, too, especially given Trump's history of Stealing from the Till, let alone a bunch of people he's previously hired doing the same.
Is also completely on-brand

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"With these groups, getting rid of them is simply a matter of motivation. Once the political or institutional will is there it’s game over, the federal government’s security apparatus is horrendously effective.
Of course that can be a double edged sword, hence the importance of keeping these agencies apolitical by any means necessary.
They should have sent a poet.[self-thump]

There's one big incident that has tamped down on that - Waco
. The cultists there deserved being rooted out, but things went pear-shaped quick, and they wound up effectively making martyrs of themselves - not so much for their religion, but anti-governmental sentiment in general.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"

Trump’s website defaced with claim that Trump admin created coronavirus: Cryptocurrency scam said Trump involved in creating COVID and rigging election.
As if we didn't have enough conspiracies.
Trump admin’s pandemic surrender draws impassioned response from WHO: WHO officials were exasperated by Trump admin’s suggestion to give up on pandemic.
Pfizer dashes hope for COVID-19 vaccine data before the election: Pfizer has been teasing an October release. Today, it quashed that possibility.
Well, that was probably the October Surprise, and it is now officially gone.
