The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It is funny that apparently the Youth WILL turn out for someone.

Not Obama

Not Bernie

But Joe Biden

Though YMMV on whether it's more for Biden or against Trump.

Really, the Senate passing that should be the Democrats' first priority if they win it. Even ahead of voting reform.

Given the demographics that have more Trump supporters and more Republican voters deciding to vote on 11/3 instead of voting early, it's a rather safe bet to assume they're voting for Biden.

We can survey voting intentions pretty well, and Biden has a 30% lead in the age category. So, yes, we can work out who they're voting for.

Except we do know. Polls have shown younger voters (18-29) back Biden about 60-65% to Trump 25-30%.

Technically the youth vote isn't turning out for anyone, as I'd bet the vast majority are using absentee ballots. Which goes to show, if you make voting more accessible and less dependent on being in a specific place on a specific day, more people will vote.

Found an interesting article about COVID-19's effects on the election, which also says that Democrats should invest extra resources into tough-but-winnable races in areas where the coronavirus is raging.

Why do people want D.C. to be a state, again? Is it just to add seats to the Senate?
Because D.C. has hundreds of thousands of people and the closest thing to representation they have in the day-to-day operation of the federal government is a non-voting Representative and the Electoral Votes they'd have if they were a state. Admitting D.C. as as a state would entitle them to two Senators and at least one Representative with an actual vote.

Just because it is politically advantageous to "our" side doesn't mean it isn't the right thing to do anyway.

That's the trap Republicans like to set: "You only support voter enfranchisement because it will get you more votes!" when in reality universal enfranchisement for US citizens should be the default position for anyone who believes in democracy.

And correspondingly, the position Republicans take shows that they do not believe in democracy. Press that button. You'll see "fraud" come up. Then hit "no evidence of fraud". They'll say it's all a conspiracy or it's "obvious" or some such.

To underscore how fucked America was after Lincoln's assassination, Virginia petitioned to have W. Virginia re-absorbed under Johnson. Virginia planned to punish those who had been involved in it for their "illegal secession" as well as implement large numbers of brutal racial laws that had been overturned by West Virginia.

West Virginia said fuck off.

This would have been the perfect opportunity to rename the state to something like Sherman or Grant, or something anti-Confederate. At least for distinction's sake. There's no state named "East Virginia".

West Virginia: Why should we rename ourselves? They're the ones who suck.

More than a few Republicans have been caught saying that the less people vote, the more their chances go up.

And the Republicans have probably realized they've run their mouths too much to try being the champions of voter enfranchisement in the hopes that the new voting pool will vote for them out of gratitude (or a desire to protect their new rights).

You can argue about whether the Democrats are motivated more by pragmatism than justice, but there's no doubt that the Republicans aren't interested in justice at all.

The sheer AMOUNT of attempted fraud this election and recent ones as well as the public nature of it has probably done as much as Covid to rally the public to vote against them.

I honestly wonder if they may of accidentally hit a "sweet spot" in voter suppression where it's enough to make people really angry but not enough to counterbalance the newly motivated voters.

Well they hit in Wisconsin with that Judge's election where all they did was piss off Democrats enough to vote in their candidate by a landslide.

Did anybody else watch/listen to Cuomo's interview with Miles Taylor last night? I knew Trump was abhorrent but HOLY SHIT he's even worse than I thought. Like, one of his ideas was to gas people crossing the border.
