Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, they identify as Christian. There's a difference.

My musician pageThe process of her nomination was much more blatantly illegitimate. It was rushed through as quickly as Mitch could manage it, to the point where due diligence was not possible. She failed to disclose a lot of things in her nomination paperwork (like ties to anti-abortion rights groups) and by the time those things were dug up by the press and reported on, it wasn't possible to ask her about them because her hearings had already been held and the Senate GOP refused to call her back in for more questioning.
Ironically, Kavanaugh is probably the most legitimate of Trump's three appointees, at least in terms of process. Gorsuch's seat should have been filled by Obama and Barrett's was rushed through so quickly that it was basically just a rubber stamp. Kavanaugh at least went through a legit hearing, even if the GOP confirmed him anyway after that hearing revealed him to be manifestly unsuited to the position... though Kennedy's retirement that gave Kavanaugh his seat was clearly a strategic move intended to give Trump a new, young SCOTUS appointee. But — and in this particular instance it's a fair point — both sides do that.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien. One of Satan's greatest weapons is turning the church against itself. We saw it with the split on LBGTQ, and we're seeing it with this now.
I just saw a Youtube ad thumbnail saying to vote Trump to stop a zombie uprising.
My only reaction can be summed up as "what."
My musician pageNYT: Burgess Owens (R) accepted at least $135,000 in illegal donations.
Owens is the one running against Democratic Rep. Ben McAdams (UT-4).
Edit: I'm curious as to whether there is any study about whether Republicans have more ethics issues than Democrats. It seems to be true but hard data would be nice.
For example, this cycle I can remember 6 GOP House representatives/candidates with ethics problems: David Schweikert (AZ-6), Burgess Owens (UT-4), Scott Taylor (VA-2), Steve Watkins (KS-2), Chris Collins (NY-27), Duncan Hunter (CA-50) (The last three are have already been removed or lost reelection). But just 2 Democrats, Sanford Bishop (GA-2) and TJ Cox (CA-21).

I hear the moon is nice this time of year. Kinda on the wet season though.
One week until election day. Anyone feeling like this?
No. Hell no. Hahaha, no. The counting of mail-in ballots alone will take up to weeks after Election Day.
That said, if there is an overwhelming margin that becomes evident on Nov. 3, we might see victory declared, but it won't be certified until the electors meet in December.

No, the winner will be determined when all the votes are counted. November 3rd is the final day to vote and when the count starts, but most states only count that day's votes and leave the early ones for later.
So there is reasonable chance that on November 3rd, Trump looks like the winner because loads of the day's vote will be done by Republicans, while Democrats are massively voting early or by mail-in ballots.

There's a fascinating and sad story of a pastor who left his Church because they were embracing Qanon as well as Trump.

And as much as I dislike Amy Barrett, there's no reason to go after her over the other two Trump appointees.
